Pio Corradi

Pio Ante Corradi (born May 19, 1940 in Buckten , Canton of Basel-Landschaft ; † January 1, 2019 ) was a Swiss cameraman and photographer .

Life

Pio Corradi's grandfather, a stone cutter from Mantua , Italy , emigrated to Buckten. His two sons continued the construction business, Corradi GmbH. Pio Corradi grew up with five siblings. His math teacher taught him how to take photographs, and he got to know the first aspects of filming during a three-month spa stay in Davos .

Pio Corradi first attended the arts and crafts school (today: Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst ) in Basel for two years and then completed an apprenticeship as a photographer . In 1964 he moved to Zurich and became camera assistant to Nicolas Gessner , Georges Alexath, Robert D. Garbade , Grigori Wassiljewitsch Alexandrow and others.

From 1972 he worked as a freelance cameraman and photographed numerous national and international feature and documentary films, for example Höhenfeuer (1985, director: Fredi M. Murer), Candy Mountain (1987, director: Robert Frank ), Reise der Hoffnung (1990, director : Xavier Koller ), Donusa (1992, director: Angeliki Antoniou ), Knowledge of Healing (1997, director: Franz Reichle ) or Balkan Melodie (2012, director: Stefan Schwietert ). In 2006 he also directed Poetry in Motion - Pierre Favre .

In March 2018 Corradi was awarded the Swiss Film Prize for his camera work on the documentary Köhlernächte (director: Robert Müller ) . At the beginning of 2019, he died after developing cancer at the age of 78.
