Heinrich Issel (born July 2, 1854 in Rinklingen near Bretten , † September 16, 1934 in Karlsruhe ) was a German costume painter, grandson of Georg Wilhelm Issel .

Heinrich Issel studied genre painting as well as portrait and history painting at the Grand Ducal Badische Kunstschule Karlsruhe from 1877 to 1885 . Since 1886 he worked as a freelance painter. Under the influence of Johann Baptist Tuttiné , he devoted himself to traditional costume painting. In 1891 and 1892 he completed two large-format works “Train of the silver wedding” and “Train of the green wedding” on behalf of the Baden state.

In 1900 he created an image of Christ based on the model of the Christ statue by Bertel Thorvaldsen in the Frauenkirche in Copenhagen for the church in Meißenheim ( Ortenaukreis ) .

Around 1900 the book “Folk costumes from the Black Forest” with 25 watercolors by Issels was published by Elchlepp-Verlag in Freiburg. These watercolors also appeared in the form of postcards.

Heinrich Issel, father of seven children, was in constant financial need. He had to separate from some children and place them with relatives. In World War I, three of his sons have fallen.
