We feed the little hippos is a children's and family game by the game designer Reinhold Wittig , published in 1983 by his game publisher Edition Perlhuhn and in the same year by the publisher fagus. The game for two to four players, ages six and up, won the 1983 Special Prize Schöne Spiel from the jury of the Game of the Year .

Theme and equipment

The game is about feeding hippos in a swamp and thus getting rid of the food packages you brought with you. In addition to the instructions, the content of the game packaging consists of:

  • a game plan on which the marshland with the feeding grounds of the hippos in the fictional country of Ombagassa is printed (in the original of the guinea fowl edition printed on the artificial leather material Skai )
  • eight hippopotamus figures
  • two pieces each in four colors
  • a cube
  • Food packages

Style of play

At the beginning of the game, the game board is set up and the eight hippopotamus figures are distributed to the designated spaces. Each player chooses a color and receives the two game pieces (a boy and a girl or two grandmas) of this color as well as a certain number of food packages depending on the number of players.

The players in turn roll the dice and can freely distribute the dice between their two pawns. If the move of a figure ends at a feeding place of one of the hippos, the player can place a food package there. A hippopotamus can get a maximum of five fodder sticks, after which it is full and goes to sleep. If a player comes to a field on which another player is already standing, he gives them a feed stick as a gift. The winner is the player who first distributed all the sticks.

Expenses and reception

We feed the little hippos appeared in 1983 as a game in the edition Perlhuhn, the game publisher of the Göttingen game author Reinhold Wittig . Like other games from the publisher and other small publishers, it was not sold in a game box but in a cardboard tube. The game plan, printed in black and white on the artificial leather material Skai , could be rolled up and packed in the roll. In the same year, the game publisher fagus published the game in a game box.

We feed the little hippos won the 1983 Game of the Year jury's special prize, Schöne Spiel, in their original packaging . The jury described the game as “an almost peaceful game for small and large players. The game mechanics are simple, but not so undemanding that adults would no longer have fun with it. Since opposing pieces are not defeated and the aim is not to be the first to a goal, the game is also suitable for children who do not like competitive games that much. The whole family can enjoy the very beautiful game material, packed in a simple cardboard tube. "

In 2000 the game was published as Etoscha by the publishing house Namibian Games in Namibia , which was also founded by Wittig, and in the same year he brought out a second edition of the game in the edition Guinea Fowl.
