Johann Baptist Tuttiné (born July 3, 1838 in Bräunlingen , † August 23, 1889 in Karlsruhe ) was a German painter who specialized in traditional costume painting.

Life

Johann Baptist Tuttiné was the son of a large shoemaker and was an orphan at an early age . Like some other Black Forest painters, Tuttiné initially worked as a clock shield painter . He studied at the Karlsruhe Art Academy from 1862 to 1866, 1869 to 1871 and 1878/79. He later devoted himself to genre painting and then specialized in traditional costume painting .

On the occasion of the silver wedding anniversary of Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden and his wife Luise , as well as the wedding of their daughter, Viktoria von Baden , with Crown Prince Gustav of Sweden and Norway in 1881, Tuttiné was commissioned by the city of Karlsruhe to organize a costume festival procession that formed the sixth division of a large pageant.

After the success of the event, he was commissioned by the Grand Duke to paint the costume parade. On September 26, 1885, the city of Karlsruhe organized a traditional costume parade on the occasion of the arrival of the newly wed Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich and his wife, Princess Hilda von Nassau , which Tuttiné was again entrusted with organizing. With 1060 people wearing traditional costumes, the participation was significantly higher than in 1881.

Tuttiné's main work is the oil painting Golden Wedding , which he created for the Grand Duke after the Karlsruhe pageant in 1881. In the course of the preparatory work, a number of oil sketches were made, which mainly showed traditional costumes from Hotzenwald. He died of a stroke in the middle of work. The painting of the green and silver wedding created after the death of Tuttiné Heinrich Issel (* 1854, † 1934).

In his obituary he is referred to as “the best expert on traditional Baden costumes and traditional costumes”. In his will it was stipulated that his "large collection of costumes (national costumes), as well as studies, costumes and interiors of old Black Forest rooms" should be sold to the grand ducal collections if possible. The holdings are now in the Baden State Museum in Karlsruhe , although it is no longer possible to identify the pieces from Tuttiné's collection.
