Journey of Hope - Turkish title Umuda yolculuk , French Voyage vers l'espoir , English Journey of Hope - is a Swiss film drama by Xavier Koller from 1990. In autumn 2016, his film was released again in a restored version.

action

The film is about an Alevi family with seven children who want to immigrate illegally to Switzerland. The parents, Haydar and Meryem, take their seven-year-old son Mehmet Ali on a trip to the country they only know from postcards; the other children should be brought in later. In Italy, the truck driver Ramser takes them to the Swiss border against payment of DM 300, where entry is denied due to a lack of visas. They get into the hands of smugglers at Milan train station . The family should hike over the mountains on foot. In the snowstorm on the Splügen Pass , Mehmet Ali dies of exhaustion in his father's arms. Haydar is arrested. The film ends with Ramser's visit to the prison .

The film received the 1991 Oscar for best foreign language film . Winning the Academy Award was considered a surprise, as the multi-award-winning French contribution Cyrano was generally favored by Bergerac .

In 1990 he received the Bronze Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival .

Real background of the movie

In October 1988, the cold death of a Turkish boy rocked Switzerland. The father was in custody taken terminated the proceedings. The refugees were later expelled back to Turkey , and their father was arrested. He was only allowed to bury his child after the interrogation. A professional group of smugglers was later arrested.
