Culture prizes from the Canton of Basel-Landschaft

The culture prizes of the canton of Basel-Landschaft are awards that have been awarded since 1958.

history

In mid-November 1957, the literature commission of the canton of Basel-Landschaft decided to introduce a literature prize, which was awarded for the first time in 1958. From 1969 the canton awarded cultural prizes at irregular intervals, which were intended to honor “special, outstanding achievements in the fields of art, literature, music and the humanities” of the canton. From the mid-1980s, new division, recognition and sponsorship awards were added.

Since 1986, the region's artistic and cultural activities have been awarded prizes every year, with few interruptions. The prizes are discussed and prepared by the cultural council; before 1990 the Culture Prize Commission was responsible for this. The culture council works out a nomination - the general government council decides on the award of the prizes . The prize money of the first three cultural prizes was financed by Nitoba, the rivetless raffle Basel . Thereafter, the Swisslos Fund Basel-Landschaft took over the cost of the prize money and the cultural prize festival.

Culture, recognition, sector and sponsorship awards

The introduction of the culture prize in 1969 goes back to the initiative of Eduard Strübin , folklorist, Baselbieter chronicler and secondary school teacher in Gelterkinden. As early as 1964, he suggested to L. Lejeune, then director of education, that special merits should be awarded the culture prize - such as that of local historian and local historian Paul Sutter.

Literature Awards (1958–1979)

In mid-November 1957, the literature commission of the canton of Basel-Landschaft decided to introduce a literature prize. The commission agreed to award the literary prize as a so-called gift of honor on special occasions such as writers' birthdays. The award should not take place annually - the canton seemed to the commission members to be too small for it. In 1958 the canton of Basel-Landschaft awarded its first literary prize - it was the first prize awarded by the canton in the field of culture / art.

Culture award

Prize sum usually CHF 25,000.–

The culture award should / can usually be awarded to personalities who

  • identify yourself with an outstanding, continuous and independent work;
  • exert influence beyond the borders of the Basel / Switzerland region;
  • have worked “across borders” / cross-disciplinary within the framework of their artistic / cultural activity (s);
  • be perceived by the public as a public personality;
  • have a high reputation in specialist and media circles.

Division price

Prize sum usually CHF 15,000–20,000.–

A division award should / can be awarded to artists and cultural workers who

  • have created works / projects of undisputed quality in their division in the Basel region;
  • appear innovative / independent through their work;
  • belong to the circle of well-known cultural / artistic workers in the Basel region;
  • be able to identify themselves to the public through a certain continuity.
  • who can show a name in the Basel area as a continuous force with potential and awareness.

Sponsorship award

Prize sum usually CHF 10,000–15,000.–

A sponsorship award should / can be awarded to artists and cultural workers who

  • are at the beginning of an independent artistic professional career;
  • appeared in the past / current year through an innovative, promising project / plant in the Basel region;
  • should receive a confirmatory impulse on their further path through a sponsorship award;
  • who can show a name in the Basel area as a young force with potential and awareness.
