Volker Biesenbender (* 1960 in Duisburg ) is a German violinist and violist who works across genres .

Biesenbender studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School in England and at the music academies in Hanover and Tel Aviv. After studying historical performance practice at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis , he dealt in depth with the musical traditions of other cultures and with improvisation . He is the first winner of the Israeli University Competition and the Yehudi Menuhin Competition Paris 1996; In 1999 he received the music prize of the canton of Basel-Landschaft .

Biesenbender was active as a classical concert musician, repeatedly performed Bach's sonatas and partitas for violin solo and interpreted a. a. Works by Elmar Lampson . He also toured with African, Indian and Arab musicians. He also performed with Yehudi Menuhin , Jordi Savall , Didier Lockwood , Stéphane Grappelli , Nigel Kennedy , Titi Winterstein , L. Subramaniam , Burhan Öçal and Andreas Staier . He played with Klaus Bruder in the Avodah Trio , which released two albums. At the Yehudi Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, he improvised with George Gruntz , Daniel Schnyder and Rudolf Lutz . In the formation La Banda Ki he worked with Michelangelo Rinaldi and Clara Gervais since 2010.

Biesenbender works as a lecturer for improvisation at the Zurich University of the Arts and has led various workshops and master classes. He wrote two books, On the Unbearable Ease of Instrumental Play and Invitation to Dance (both published by Nepomuk-Verlag, Aarau), in which he advocates consistently improvising any kind of music.
