The Punta Negra dam ( Spanish: Represa Punta Negra or Dique Punta Negra ) is a dam with hydroelectric power plant in the province of San Juan , Argentina . It dams the Río San Juan to a reservoir (Spanish Embalse Punta Negra ). The Los Caracoles dam is located around 15 km upstream. The provincial capital San Juan is about 30 km east of the Punta Negra dam.

The dam is primarily used to generate electricity and also for irrigation. Construction of the dam started in December 2009. It is owned and operated by Energia Provincial Sociedad del Estado (EPSE).

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a CFR dam with a height of 97 (or 105) m above the river bed (maximum height 115 or 118 m). The top of the dam is at an altitude of 958 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 749 m. The volume of the barrier structure is 8.7 million m³. The dam has a flood relief system , through which a maximum of 3500 m³ / s can be discharged.

Reservoir

When the reservoir is full, it extends over an area of ​​around 12.5 km² and holds 500 million m³ of water. The impoundment began on August 29, 2015.

power plant

The power plant's machine house is at the foot of the dam on the left. The total installed capacity is 63 (or 65) MW . The average annual generation is given as 300 (or 360 or 380) million  kWh . The power plant went into operation in July 2016.

The two Francis turbines each have a maximum output of 31.64 (or 32.5) MW and the generators 42  MVA . The fall height is 80 (or 85 or 86) m. The maximum flow rate is 80 (or 85) m³ / s for the two turbines.

The cost of the project is given as USD 410 (or 550) million .
