The dam Los Caracoles ( Spanish Represa Los Caracoles ) is a dam with hydroelectric power station in the province of San Juan , Argentina . It dams the Río San Juan to a reservoir (Spanish Embalse Los Caracoles ). The Punta Negra dam is located around 15 km downstream. The provincial capital San Juan is about 50 km east of the Los Caracoles dam.

The dam is primarily used to generate electricity and also for irrigation. It is owned and operated by Energia Provincial Sociedad del Estado (EPSE).

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a CFR dam with a height of 128.8 (or 136) m above the river bed. The top of the dam is at an altitude of 1119 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 620 m. The volume of the barrier structure is 9.7 (or 10.35) million m³. The dam has a flood relief system , through which a maximum of 3200 m³ / s can be discharged.

Reservoir

When the reservoir is completely blocked, it extends over an area of ​​around 12.9 km² and holds 565 million m³ of water. The impoundment began on October 10, 2008.

power plant

The power plant went into operation on April 13, 2009; it is located about one kilometer downstream from the dam. The total installed capacity is 125 (or 135) MW . The average annual production is 715 million  kWh . The power plant's two Francis turbines have a maximum output of 62.6 MW each. The fall height is 150 m. The maximum flow rate is 90 m³ / s for the two turbines.
