Wind orchestra of the Basel region

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Swiss wind orchestra of the Basel region (bobl) was a symphonic wind orchestra that played primarily contemporary original wind works from 1987 to 2004. The formation was originally founded in 1987 as the Baselland wind orchestra by Bruno Martin and Philipp Wagner, who were both studying trumpet and wind orchestra conducting at the time. During its existence, the orchestra has received several prizes and awards, particularly at international festivals and competitions.

profile

Organized as an ad hoc orchestra, primarily music students and talented amateur musicians from the Basel region played in the formation. Usually there were two concert sessions per year.

What was unusual was the fact that the orchestra was musically led by two conductors throughout its existence , who passed the baton several times during the concerts. The aim of the two founders and conductors Bruno Martin and Philipp Wagner (the latter has been director of the Stadtmusik Basel since 1989 and has been in command of the Swiss Army Military Music Center since 2012 ) was to create an ensemble in north-western Switzerland that was primarily dedicated to contemporary original wind works, promoted committed amateur musicians and gave them access to this type of music. In 1993, the original name was changed to the Basel region wind orchestra, as more and more musicians from the wider region joined it. The established abbreviation bobl was retained.

In 1990 the orchestra began to take part in international competitions abroad. The Basel region's wind orchestra won the Gothenburg International Music Festival in Sweden (one of the largest wind music festivals in Scandinavia) in 1990 and the Australian International Music Festival in Sydney in 1995 , at which the orchestra performed in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House . Other appearances abroad were participation in the WASBE Conference in Valencia , Spain in 1993, and at the Mid Europe Festival in Schladming , Austria in 1999 (one of the largest European festivals for wind orchestras and ensembles). In 1991, the bobl received the music culture award of the canton of Basel-Landschaft . In 2004 the wind band was dissolved.
