The Glue (also theGlue ; engl. "The glue ") is a Swiss a cappella - music group from Basel , originally in 1997 modeled after the prince was founded and sings mainly self-penned songs.
Band history
At the time of its founding, all members of The Glue sang in the Knabenkantorei Basel . During a guest performance by the Kantorei in Vienna, people spontaneously sang in the group on the street to beg money for a visit to the Prater, and the idea of an a cappella group was born. In addition, the young people wanted to be able to sing more secular music (such as the Comedian Harmonists or, at the time very topical, Die Prinzen ), while in the choir almost exclusively sacred music was sung.
The Glue first appeared on private occasions such as birthdays and weddings. Back then the repertoire consisted mostly of cover versions. With second place at the Strampolin young talent competition in Basel , a first demo CD called Laora L [ist] tot was produced. As a result, the group made a name for itself with semi-staged plays. Regional breakthrough The Glue by participating in the Charivari - Musical Stärnestaub 2000 and 2002. As a result, the performances, the first album accumulated, so in summer 2001 mundwerk appeared. The album consisted of cover versions of well-known songs and folk songs and of original compositions.
By 2002 mundwerk had been performed about 100 times. In the same year, the single Shy was released and a new program under the name mole was performed at performances. The Glue showed itself to be more individual with mole , more and more songs came to the fore, and the work was more professional. At the beginning of 2003 the live album maulwurf was produced from it, in 2005 also a DVD. From 2004 appearances in the Casinotheater Winterthur brought national fame and also in Germany The Glue celebrated great success with concerts in Freiburg, Stuttgart and Berlin. On April 26, 2005, the mole program was performed for the last time.
After The Glue presented their latest album BOCA JUNIORS on October 20, 2005 at the Basel Theater , the a cappella band could be found on several stages in Switzerland and Germany. The live program of the same name represented a further qualitative leap, as it was the first time that professional sound and lighting technicians were employed and a focus was placed on the dramaturgical design.
On the occasion of their tenth anniversary, The Glue organized the Lala Blabla Pomme d'Adam vocal art festival in the Stadtcasino Basel on September 22, 2007 . International a cappella greats from all musical genres performed in two concerts. a. Huun-Huur-Tu , White Raven , Insinghizi , Noëmi Nadelmann with the vocal ensemble Voices , as well as the Knabenkantorei Basel and The Glue with all former band members.
At first a cappella Award Baden-Wuerttemberg in Ulm The Glue took part of 2008. In November 2010 they received the Canton Basel-Landschaft Culture Prize endowed with CHF 15,000.
One month later, in December 2010, The Glue and Come What May took part in The Big Decision Show in SF 1, the national preliminary decision for the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest . From over 500 applicants, the band made it to a pre-selection on eurovision.sf.tv, where at the beginning of November 2010 the users could choose 7 of the 12 candidates, among the 12 participants, who were allowed to present their songs live on the show. The Glue had starting number 12 and ended up in 5th place in the final result.
In 2011, The Glue won first place in the Harmony Sweepstakes Regional Competition at Miller's Theater in New York in the category of best original composition for building sandcastles and second place overall. They also took part in the 5th International A CAPPELLA Competition in Leipzig.
In 2012 The Glue gave concerts in South Africa, the USA, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Morocco, the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland as part of their world tour known as Gluebâlisation . In the course of this, they also entered the finals of the Contemporary World Cup Competition at the Taiwan International Contemporary A Cappella Festival and received a gold medal for their performance. In addition, The Glue set a personal audience record of 20,000 spectators with a performance at the Taichung Jazz Festival 2012.
In the same year on September 22nd, for the band's 15th anniversary, the band organized The Jubilee Show with the Knabenkantorei Basel , the Voices of the Musikschule Münchenstein, the Männerstimmen Basel , Anna Rossinelli and Band, the G * appeals , the Ladybirds as well as the Ballet School Theater Basel and The glue with all alumni. The moderation was the slampoet Laurin Buser .
The Glue have been on the road with their new program La bouche qui rit since the premiere in May 2014 . In October 2014 they toured Asia again with stops in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan and again took part in the Taiwan International Contemporary A Cappella Festival , where they received a silver medal and the prize for the best composition ( Dui Shabao , translation of building sand castles in Mandarin) .
Trivia
According to the band, the name The Glue has no deeper meaning, but was chosen because of its sound, without the band knowing the exact meaning at the time it was founded (Clalüna: When it turned out that it was called «glue», we had a wide variety of variants tried to justify the name, from “we glue styles together” to “we captivate the audience as if it were glued” - but the truth is: it just sounds good. ).
A hallmark of the band is the multilingualism of their repertoire, with no language clearly dominating. There are songs in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Romansh, Mandarin or Zulu. With a few exceptions, these songs are not covered, but were actually written by the band in that language. The band also works in a wide range of styles. In addition to pop and rock songs, there are drum 'n' bass, reggae, funk, chansons or soul as well as, of course, classic influences due to the history of their origin.
In addition to full-length concerts and competitions, The Glue also often perform at a cappella festivals or on concert nights. Examples include the Vokal Total A-cappella Festival in Munich, the A-cappella Festival in Pfäffikon SZ, the Zurich Acapella Night or the Sparkasse A-Cappella Festival in Dortmund.
Even if The Glue published a songbook for the anniversary in 2012 , the band emphasizes again and again that they work entirely without sheet music. For the realization of the songbook, arranger David Rossel first had to note the songs by ear before the settings could be edited.
Band members
The original line-up consisted of five singers: Oliver Rudin , Martin Vischer , Daniel Raaflaub, Stefan Raaflaub and Jonas Göttin. When the Raaflaub brothers retired in 1998, Daniel Recher and Tumasch Clalüna joined the band. In 1999, Recher decided to study in St. Gallen and left the band. Adrien Jaccottet became the new bass player, and a year later, Gregor Beermann was joined by another, deeper bass player who completed the ensemble. There were six people in The Glue until 2003, when Vischer resigned because of studying abroad in Leipzig and Jaccottet because of his studies and career as a junior referee.
All former and active band members except Adrien Jacottet and the beatboxers Florens Meury, Florian Volkmann and Michael Moor come from the Knabenkantorei Basel ; however (due to age) no singer sings actively in this choir anymore. With the exception of beatboxer Michael Moor, all active members of The Glue and some former members of The Glue and / or the Knabenkantorei Basel also sing in the men 's choir, Männerstimmen Basel, founded in 2008 by The Glue singer Oliver Rudin .
