biography

The men's voices Basel were founded in 2008 by several former members of the Knabenkantorei Basel . Even today, the majority of the singers are former cantorists; alumni from other choirs are also there, including a. Youth choirs of the Music Academy of the City of Basel , Tölzer Boys 'Choir  and St. Thomas' Choir .

The choir performed in public for the first time in 2008 at the Eidgenössische Gesangfest in Meiringen , where it was awarded the highest rating “excellent”. At the end of 2008 the first concert with Rheinberger's Mass in B flat major followed , and in the spring of 2009 the first trip abroad to Tallinn , where the choir was recognized as the best male choir. Further tours have taken the choir to Macedonia, Ireland, England, Latvia, Slovenia and the USA. In 2010 the choir released its first CD Tonträger no. 1 with traditional male choir pieces by Saint-Saëns , Pracht , Lauridsen , Whitacre and the Comedian Harmonists .

In 2011 the choir carried out its first major concert project. The choir filmed itself during a dramaturgically staged hike through the Swiss Jura and gave concerts under the title tøngedrøhn - Eine Klang + Bildexpedition , during which these sequences were shown on screen. For this purpose, a DVD was then created which shows the film recordings, combined with a sound recording, from one of the live concerts. In July 2012 the choir took part in the World Choir Games  in Cincinnati  and was named World Champion in the category “Male Choirs” .

In the winter of 2013, the second CD, record no.2, followed . For this purpose, contemporary male choir works of various styles were recorded. a. from Estonia ( Veljo Tormis ), Macedonia ( Kiril Makedonski ), Korea ( Arirang ), India ( AR Rahman ) and Graubünden ( Gion Anton Derungs ); It also contains the vocal quartets of the recently rediscovered composer Jewgeni Gunst as a world premiere. Together with the women's choir Voices , the Männerstimmen Basel took part in a Son & Lumière concert in Basel's cathedral in 2013 . At this event, titled as an audiovisual choir concert , singing a. a. Film sequences projected onto the ceiling and worked with light effects.

In June 2014 the choir was the first independent Swiss choir to take part in Laulupidu in Tallinn; The choir then traveled to the World Choir Games in Riga, where it came 4th in the “Musica Sacra” category as the best European choir. In 2015 the choir released its successful program “Volkhorn” on CD; the program was developed in cooperation with the Dauprat Horn Quartet and included many popular folk songs from German-speaking countries, primarily Switzerland. In May 2015, the choir won the largest male choir competition in Europe in Truro ( Cornwall ) and previously performed in London , Cambridge  and Oxford .

The choir is currently on tour with the spiritual program “pílagrímr”. In spring 2016, the choir went on a concert tour to the Faroe Islands and Iceland (as a guest choir at the Nordic-Baltic Male Choir at the invitation of the Nordic Singers Association).

Visually, they differ from other choirs, among other things, in that they do not appear in evening wear, but in the 1920s schoolboy style with linen shirts, knickerbockers, knee socks and suspenders. This is particularly noticeable because the choir is relatively young - the singers are between 20 and 35 years old, some of them are students.
