Jacques Düblin (born June 24, 1901 in Oberwil , Basel-Land ; † June 26, 1978 there ) was a Swiss painter .

life and work

Jacques Düblin was the son of the postman Jakob Düblin and Paulina Degen, who ran a grocery store in Oberwil. Since the shop also held the salt monopoly for the whole of Leimental , Düblin was given the village name Salzjoggi .

After completing an apprenticeship as a mechanic, he trained as a machine technician from 1919 to 1922 at the Technikum in Winterthur, now the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Winterthur , which he completed with a machine technician diploma. He then worked as a designer at Brown Boveri in Münchenstein .

He received his training as a painter from 1925 to 1928 at the Académie Julian in Paris with Paul Albert Laurens . In 1927 he was able to sell his first picture at the Salon d'Automne . His early role models were Vincent van Gogh , Paul Cézanne and the Impressionists . Düblin developed further in the direction of expressionism . Pen-and-ink drawings made in Paris at that time show the first courageous steps towards the abstract.

In 1928 Düblin returned to Oberwil. There he took part in several constellations in Basel with his pictures, which depicted landscapes of the Leimental as well as everyday family scenes. 1936 began his extensive work as a glass painter . The highlights are the three blue choir windows in the Catholic Church in Oberwil from 1965.

Even if some of his murals were destroyed in the course of renovations or the demolition of the buildings, his larger works, including the glass windows for churches or on public buildings, can also be found outside of Baselland.

Parallel to his artistic work, Düblin was involved in regional cultural policy. In 1930 he founded the cantonal art credit Baselland together with the artists Walter Eglin , Otto Plattner and Ernst Bolens and in 1944 the Basellandschaftliche Kunstvereinigung, now known as the Baselland Art Association. From 1954 to 1958 he was President of GSMBA Basel and from 1959 to 1964 on the central board of GSMBA.

In 1931 he married Klara Brodmann von Ettingen . They had five children together. One son is the artist Lukas Düblin (* 1933), who lives in Oberwil.

Düblin was well connected in the region and was friends with Jakob Strasser , Coghuf , Ferdinand Gehr , Karl Moor and Walter Schneider. In 1971 he was awarded the Culture Prize of the Canton of Basel-Landschaft .

In 2018, on the occasion of Düblin's 40th anniversary of death, works on paper, gouaches , watercolors and drawings were exhibited at a memorial exhibition in the Kulturforum Sprützehüsli in Oberwil . The publication accompanying the exhibition by curator Urs Berger has been published by Friedrich Reinhardt Verlag in Basel.
