tasks

With the law on archiving of May 11, 2006, the canton of Basel-Landschaft enshrined archiving in law. The law regulates file management , archiving and the use of archived documents. The State Archives have the task of deciding on the archivability of the documents offered, of maintaining the documents of the canton that are to be kept permanently and ensuring their accessibility.

history

With the separation of the cantons in 1833, the holdings of the Basel State Archives were also divided between the two half-cantons as part of the common state property. The negotiations on the distribution of the archive material lasted until the summer of 1834.

After the files and documents that had fallen on the landscape were initially housed in the district clerk's office in Liestal, in the barracks and in the attic of the government building, they were moved to the upper part of the small armory at the urging of the land clerk, Benedikt Banga, who was responsible for the archive . In 1853, a separate archive building was built with the new west wing of the government building. With the passing of an archive law in 1867, Jakob Jourdan von Waldenburg was elected as the first full-time state archivist. In 1887, however, the State Archives were subordinated to the State Chancellery and the respective land clerk was appointed part-time state archivist.

Between 1911 and 1927 the records were from 1832 to the then also in the State Archives of Basel-Stadt practiced pertinence reorganized and created the so-called «Newer Archive». A new archive regulation in 1926 consolidated this new order. Only the dramatic increase in the number of files in the post-war period brought about the change to today's order according to provenance .

In 1959, the historian Hans Sutter was re-elected for the first time as a full-time state archivist. In 1961 the state archivist was also given the management of the cantonal library . In the same year, the archive was able to move into an archive building on Wiedenhubstrasse. In 2007 this was replaced by a new building planned by the Zurich architects EM2N.

Regula Nebiker Toebak has been the state archivist since 2000.
