Mani Matter - Why are you so sad? is a documentary film by the Swiss director Friedrich Kappeler from 2002. The film about the songwriter Mani Matter , who died in 1972, became the most successful Swiss documentary film of all time with 146,624 admissions in Switzerland and held this record until 2012.
Based on interviews with family members and friends and many well-known Swiss musicians and small artists, the film tells the biography of Mani Matters. In between, recordings of Matter's performances, cover versions of his songs and private recordings are shown, and the actors Stefan Kurt and Ueli Jäggi read his short stories. Among the contributors are Joy Matter , Meret Matter , Dodo Hug , Stephan Eicher , Urs Frauchiger , Polo Hofer , Franz Hohler , Kuno Lauener and Emil Steinberger .
The film was shown on Swiss television and is available on DVD.
