Ultrabook

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ultrabook is a registered trademark of Intel for particularly thin and light notebooks with Intel processors . In order to be allowed to bear the name, the devices must meet a number of requirements. These include a long battery life, acceptable performance and tablet computer- like features like waking up quickly from standby.

Intel announced the Ultrabooks line at Computex 2011 and expected a 40% share of the laptop market by the end of 2012. In mid-2019, after the ultrabook brand had been quiet for years, the successor project, Project Athena, was announced.

Hardware requirements

The introduction of the ultrabooks should take place in three stages and coincide with the introduction of the low-voltage processors Sandy Bridge , Ivy Bridge and Haswell . Intel's goal of achieving a 40% share of ultrabooks in the total notebook market by the end of 2012 was not achieved until the third stage was introduced. The market share should have been around 20 percent at the end of 2012.

Since the CES 2013 there have been new requirements for manufacturers to use the brand name -Ultrabook-. This now means that a wireless display and a touchscreen must be part of the basic equipment.

First stage (4th quarter 2011)

  • Maximum 21 mm thick
  • Long battery life of at least 5 hours (with low load)
  • Mainstream pricing - under $ 1,000 excluding VAT for the entry-level models
  • Low-voltage processors : Sandy Bridge with 17 watt TDP
    • Intel Core i3-2367M (1.4 GHz)
    • Intel Core i5-2467M (1.6 GHz)
    • Intel Core i5-2557M (1.7 GHz)
    • Intel Core i7-2637M (1.7 GHz)
    • Intel Core i7-2677M (1.8 GHz)
  • Advanced integrated graphics solution (Intel HD 3000)

Second stage (2012)

  • Low-voltage (approx. 17 W TDP ) Intel Ivy Bridge processors with 30% higher graphics performance and 20% higher main processor performance compared to Sandy Bridge
  • USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt, PCI Express 3.0

Third stage (2013)

  • Low-voltage Haswell processors with a TDP of 15 W.
  • New, extended power-saving system, which should save half the energy compared to the Sandy Bridge chips from 2011
  • Battery life: 6 hours with Full HD video playback and 9 hours in Windows 8 idle
  • Further properties: Obligatory touchscreen , mandatory Intel Wireless Display (WiDi), voice control - a two-way microphone suitable for voice input must be installed, at least one USB 3.0 port

Special case Apple MacBook Air

Although the MacBook Air from 2008 meets all of Intel's requirements for an ultrabook, the MacBook Air was not referred to as an ultrabook for trademark reasons.
