Umbonia is a genus of treehoppers with 15 kinds, partly mandrel cicadas (engl. Thorn bugs ) mentioned.

The genus Umbonia occurs mainly in northern South and Central America and in Mexico ( Neotropic ecozone ). Several species are also known from the subtropics of North America, including Umbonia crassicornis .

These cicadas are relatively large and showy, approx. 9 to 17 mm long. The males are slightly smaller than the females. The animals are mostly yellowish or greenish in color, rarely reddish. The head and pronotum have one or more distinctive red lines. The pronotum usually has a clear (forward or backward) tip ("thorn"), and a pointed extension to the rear that usually does not reach the rear end of the wings. Often, two smaller extensions are also formed on the sides at the front. The wings are usually partially covered by the posterior pronotum process. Their five apical cells usually show clearly parallel veins. The similar cicadas of the genus Alchisme are usually somewhat smaller and they have more distinct lateral appendages.

The Umbionia cicadas are usually found in groups, the females stay with their young, protect and defend them. They mostly feed on Fabaceae , especially the genus Inga .
