As Umbra (lat .: umbra - Shadow) or Umbraun is called an earth color , different depending on the origin and origin shades possesses. Other names for this dye are earth brown , Roman brown or sepia brown . In contrast to real sepia , however, the latter is an inorganic pigment.

  • The best variety is found on the island of Cyprus and is sold as Cypriot or Turkish umber at the highest prices. It has a brown tone with a clear gray tint and is a bit greener than brown ocher . When this variety is fired, it takes on a reddish brown color.
  • Similar, but less valuable goods are found in the iron stone pits around Saalfeld / Saale , Könitz and Kamsdorf , as well as in various areas of England and Sicily . The one from the latter site is a chestnut brown iron ocher with a shell-like break.

As a substitute for real umber, the Cologne umber , the Kassler brown obtained from lignite is used. Often the umber that can be bought in small traffic is nothing more than a bolus .

Unburned umber

All Umbrasorten must powdered before use and sludges are exempt from sandy parts when they are not. They are used very frequently for all kinds of paints, both as oil and water-based paints, for dark varnishes, particularly frequently in oilcloth manufacture, for browning wood, for gilding grounds, and in decorative cosmetics.

Shadow painting

Color mixtures with umber are used to represent shadows - in painting, as well as in facade painting for shadow effects. For this purpose, the color of the object is mixed with umber to represent the shadow of this object. Example: The shade of a red dress would be created with a mixture of the same red and umber. Or: the façade surface of a building that is not exposed to light is painted with a mixture of main color and umber.

The Social Democratic Party of Germany has been using the color umber in its advertising since the 2005 Bundestag election . The use of umber in public appearances was also discussed in the media in 2005.
