Subversion bill

The overthrow bill ("Law on amendments and additions to the Criminal Code, the Military Code and the Act on the Press") was a bill introduced into the German Reichstag on December 5, 1894 by the Reich Chancellor Prince Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst , which, according to its justification, dangerous endeavors aimed at the violent overthrow of the existing constitution and social order of the German Reich should counteract.

In the opinion of the authors of the overthrow bill, the forces behind these efforts were in particular Social Democrats . It was felt that the existing laws were insufficient to combat them.

The Reichstag rejected this proposal because the statutes were too vague and the interference with the freedom of the press and even the freedom of science appeared to be too great.

On May 11, 1895, the overturn bill was rejected in second reading .
