Environment and Water Management Fund

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Environment and Water Management Fund is an institution organized as a fund under public law to provide financial support for municipal environmental protection tasks.

The fund was established by merging the water management fund and the environmental fund in 1987. The aim was to use synergies in order to be able to make more resources available to the environmental fund, since the water management fund was much more endowed than the environmental fund. In the years 1980–1987, around 6 billion schillings (approx. 440 million euros) were paid out as funding by the water management fund, while the environmental fund only achieved a tenth of that.

The water management fund was founded in 1959 and was part of the Federal Ministry for Buildings and Technology . The task was to finance water supply and disposal systems for municipalities or public bodies such as water cooperatives etc.

The environmental fund was set up much later, in 1984 at the Federal Ministry for Health and Environmental Protection . This served as a rehabilitation instrument in the areas of air pollution control, noise protection and the avoidance and recycling of hazardous waste, and to provide financial support for the adaptation of old operational systems to the state of the art.

Additional tasks were added in 1991 and 1992. For example, the remediation of contaminated sites is promoted. Environmental protection measures in the Czech Republic , Slovakia , Hungary and Slovenia are also supported by intangible subsidies .

Financing is handled by Kommunalkredit Austria .
