Environmental Advisory Committee

The Environmental Verification Committee (UGA) at the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) was set up in Germany in 1995 to comply with the requirements of Council Regulation (EEC) No. 1836/93 of June 29, 1993 on the voluntary participation of industrialists Companies to implement a community system for environmental management and environmental auditing . The office of the UGA is based in Berlin .

tasks

The Environmental Verification Committee (UGA) is a subordinate division of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and advises the BMU on issues relating to the European environmental management system EMAS . This was developed by the European Union and is a community system of environmental management and environmental auditing for organizations that want to improve their environmental performance . The position, composition and tasks of the environmental expert committee are set out in the national environmental audit law (UAG).

The tasks of the UGA include:

  • To issue guidelines for the approval, examination and supervision of environmental verifiers and their organizations
  • to keep a list of examiners for the approval tests of environmental verifiers
  • To recommend experts for objection matters
  • to advise the Federal Ministry on EMAS issues
  • promote the diffusion of EMAS

composition

The committee is made up of 25 environmental experts from various social groups, these and their deputies are appointed for a period of three years. The representatives of companies, environmental associations, trade unions , environmental expert organizations and federal and state administrations have committed themselves on a voluntary basis to support and promote EMAS in a variety of ways.

Each appointment period (every three years) is elected from the members and deputies of the chair and four deputy chair from the banks.
