The Environmental Protection Group Physics-Geosciences was an environmental protection organization in Hamburg that existed between 1975 and 2010.

history

Sampling in the wastewater discharge of the Norddeutsche Affinerie around 1982
The early wastewater samples were carried out with small pleasure boats in the port of Hamburg. Around 1980
In 1981 a diver took silt samples in the canals of the North German Affinerie . The samples were very heavily contaminated with heavy metals

The environmental protection group physics-geosciences was founded in 1975 as a student initiative at the time of the nuclear disputes over the nuclear power plant in Brokdorf . The initial work focused on the analysis of the industrialization of the Lower Elbe region as proposed by the Hamburg Senator for Economic Affairs at the time, Helmuth Kern, as an "axis model".

From 1979 the group began to take its own measurements to check the air and water quality in Hamburg.

In 1981 she discovered that the Norddeutsche Affinerie was discharging wastewater with excessively high concentrations of heavy metals (above all cadmium , arsenic , copper , zinc and lead ) into the surrounding docks .

In 1983 it presented an investigation program covering a large area of the Hamburg port area in which port silt was examined for heavy metals. Several parts of the port were identified as heavily polluted. Again, the canals in front of the Norddeutsche Affinerie were the most heavily polluted port areas.

The results of the port and wastewater inspections appeared in three publications "Wasser 1-3" between 1981 and 1988.

In the following years, extensive renovation work was carried out at the Norddeutsche Affinerie due to requirements from the Hamburg environmental authority.

At the beginning of the 1980s the number of members had grown to over 40 people. In order to better organize the inspection trips to the sewage inlets in the port, the group bought its own launch "Elise" in 1982 . The filmmaker Wolfgang Morell documented the purchase and restoration of the Elise in his film "Watermark". The launch was sold again in 1995, as maintaining the ship blocked too much work capacity.

In 1985 the group published their book "Shiny Shops" about the North German Affinerie.

Other publications dealt with waste disposal ("Sondermüll" (1988) and "Müllkonzept" (1989)) and the sewage sludge problem ("Klärschlamm" (1998)).

The group found a main point of criticism in the inadequate actions of the authorities, which too often played into the hands of the initiating companies in terms of legislation and weak controls.

Since the 1990s, the number of members - as in many citizens' initiatives - has fallen sharply.
