The listed Aurubis AG (formerly Norddeutsche Affinerie AG ) is one of the world's largest copper producers and the world's largest copper recycler based in Germany. Following the takeover of the Belgian copper producer Cumerio by Norddeutsche Affinerie AG on February 18, 2008, the company has been trading as Aurubis AG since April 1, 2009 .

The company produces over one million tons of copper cathodes annually, uses them to manufacture various copper products and employs around 6,500 people.

history

Aurubis emerged from several mergers of other companies. The earliest known forerunner is the company Beit, Marcus und Salomon, Gold- und Silberscheider , which was named for the first time in 1783 in the Hamburg merchant's almanac . This company initially smelted coins and precious metals - alloys . Over time, the production moved to the smelting of ores . After the Hamburg shipowners began to bring copper ore back from North and South America on their emigrant ships' return voyages from around 1830, a lucrative market arose. In 1846 Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & Sohn under Johan Cesar Godeffroy (1813–1885) at the Beit, Marcus and Salomon, gold and silver separators under Ferdinand Beit (1817–1870). The joint company was called Elbkupferwerk . It processed copper ores that its own and foreign ships from South America, mainly from Chile , landed in the port of Hamburg.

The economic upswing led to the establishment of the Elbhütten-Affinier- und Handelsgesellschaft in 1856 , whereby the Elbkupferwerk and the Beit'sche parent plant , a company of Marcus Solomon Beit , were merged. This produced around 3000 tons of copper per year. After the Norddeutsche Bank took over the Beit'sche parent plant , it founded Norddeutsche Affinerie AG on April 28, 1866 .

Norddeutsche Affinerie has been producing copper on the Peute , an industrial area in Hamburg-Veddel, since 1910 . Their production facilities take up a large part of the industrial area there.

After the National Socialists came to power, Richard Merton , Julius Levisohn and Heinrich Wohlwill, three people of Jewish descent, had to resign from the board. The Norddeutsche Affinerie experienced a massive boom in these years: on the eve of the Second World War, the company covered half of German copper consumption and employed around 1,450 people. From 1940 the Norddeutsche Affinerie was involved in the processing of looted gold that had been blackmailed by Jewish owners as part of the pawnshop . A year earlier, Wilhelm Avieny from Metallgesellschaft and Hermann Schlosser from Degussa, two people, took on leading positions on the Supervisory Board that were closely related to National Socialist politics. During the World War, the Norddeutsche Affinerie was an important supplier for the ammunition industry and used forced labor in production . At the peak in July 1944, out of a total of around 1900 employees, 806 were forced laborers.

Since May 4, 2007, Aurubis has held a stake in the Moorburg coal-fired power plant , which Vattenfall Europe built in Hamburg-Moorburg for imported hard coal , through what is known as a virtual power plant slice - a corporate law stake of 115 MW . Thanks to a long-term supply contract, the pricing of which is based on the generation costs of the relevant power plant, Aurubis will purchase one billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year from Vattenfall by 2040.

By February 18, 2008, Norddeutsche Affinerie had taken over 91% of the Belgian copper processor Cumerio after a long dispute with A-Tec Industries . On April 15, 2008, the complete takeover of Cumerio was completed through a squeeze-out .

On February 26, 2009, the general meeting of Norddeutsche Affinerie AG resolved to rename the company to Aurubis AG with effect from April 1, 2009 . The name Aurubis was chosen based on the Latin words for gold and red in order to emphasize the importance of copper as a metal of exceptional value (“red gold”). The company logo, however, remained unchanged.

At the same time, Prymetall GmbH & Co. KG changed its name to Aurubis Stolberg GmbH & Co. KG.

On September 1, 2011, Aurubis completed the acquisition of the former Luvata Rolled Products Division. Aurubis AG now has 16 production sites, four service centers and an extensive sales system for copper products.

In 2016, Aurubis AG celebrated its company anniversary under the motto “150 years of the future”.

The European Commission has cleared under the Merger on February 6, 2019, the proposed acquisition of the rolled products division of Aurubis and the joint venture heavy Halbzeugwerk by the Wieland group prohibited based in Ulm. The Commissioner responsible for competition in the European Union , Margrethe Vestager , sees that the merger would reduce competition and drive up the prices of the copper rolled products used by European manufacturers.

activities

The core business is copper refining for the extraction of copper cathodes from copper concentrates, copper scrap and recycling materials. This is followed by further processing into wire rod, continuous cast shapes , rolled products and copper alloys .

Precious metals are also an important product area at Aurubis. As additional special products, the Aurubis Group produces and markets all the important accompanying elements from copper production. This is used to produce sulfuric acid and iron silicate stone , among other things .

Customers include companies in the copper semi-finished product industry, the electrical, electronics and chemical industries as well as suppliers for the renewable energies, construction and automotive industries.

Environmental pollution and countermeasures

Aurubis is considered to be the strongest heavy metal emitter in northern Germany.

In 1985 the arsenic scandal broke out when it became known that heavy metals had accumulated in the soil in the east of Hamburg , especially in the agricultural areas . The hiding of the Hamburg authorities turned it into a scandal. The environmental protection group Physics-Geosciences showed with its own water and soil samples that arsenic , cadmium , copper , zinc and other heavy metals had accumulated heavily in the harbor silt in front of the plant and that they reached the Elbe from cracks and crevices in the quay in 2005 . Arsenic and cadmium in particular were also found in the wastewater discharges and in the exhaust air from Essen.

Following the scandal, Aurubis signed five voluntary agreements with the Hamburg Authority for Urban Development and the Environment to improve environmental protection and increase energy efficiency. In February 2011, a sixth emission reduction agreement was concluded between Aurubis and the city, which had environmental protection measures with investments of around 20 million euros and a term until 2016.

In 1989 there was a dioxin scandal in Rastatt due to the now closed daughter Fahlbusch. Dioxin concentrations of more than 1000 ng / kg were measured on the premises and the surrounding area, the maximum levels reaching up to 7926 ng / kg. The 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzoparadioxin (TCDD) known from the Seveso accident was found in every tenth sample with concentrations from 19 to 465 ng / kg, more than at the time in the "dead zone" in northern Italy.

Since 2000, the measures to improve environmental protection in the area of copper production have amounted to more than 590 million euros. That is 0.6% of the turnover generated in this period and 39.25% of the profit generated in this period (99.155 billion total turnover and 1.503 billion profit).
