history

Moorburg 1902
Monument Moorburger Schanze

Moorburg has been part of Hamburg since 1375. It is the oldest and until 1937 was the only district in Hamburg south of the Elbe. It is also one of the oldest districts in Hamburg. The Hamburg office of Ritzebüttel with the island of Neuwerk are also located on the south side of the Elbe, but until 1937 they did not belong to the city, but to the state of Hamburg. It is a long street village . Only around the church was there a cluster of houses that suggest something like a center.

The Hamburgers bought the areas of Olde Moor and Reetwisch , which were in the immediate vicinity of the Alte Süderelbe , which was the main river of the Elbe at that time and was preferred by ships. They built here in 1390, a castle or a permanently manned defensive tower, which according to the landscape character Moorburg was called to control from there shipping and storage right exercise. This meant that the merchants either had to pay customs duties for the goods on the ships or had to offer their goods for sale in Hamburg for some time. This led to a permanent dispute with the Lüneburg dukes , who resided in neighboring Harburg, and saw their rights violated. Hamburg ultimately decided the dispute for itself.

At the Moorburger Kirchdeich there is a memorial that commemorates the defense of Moorburg at the Moorburger Schanze (today in the area of the power station) against the French troops in 1814 during the Wars of Liberation .

The river course of the old Süderelbe north of Moorburg was filled in after the storm surge in 1962 and the runoff was directed over the Köhlbrand .

Moorburg has been in the port expansion area since 1982 . Although the city of Hamburg has already bought more than 90 percent of the houses, a renovation program is underway for the real estate owned by the city. Hamburg also continued to invest in the social infrastructure. The city recently issued a limited number of temporary building permits for those willing to build in Moorburg. The Hamburg Port Authority is planning to set up a more than 30 m high landfill for contaminated harbor silt on an area of 45 ha. This means that the construction of a container terminal in Moorburg would no longer be possible. Protest from the town and the Harburg district assembly is articulated against these plans.

The concept of a “knowledge park for environmental and maritime technologies”, which is geared towards a collaboration with the nearby Hamburg University of Technology, is being discussed as a use for the areas .

The 2015 state elections for the Hamburg citizenship brought the following results in Moorburg, which is part of the Süderelbe constituency , together with Altenwerder :

Buildings

A church in Moorburg was mentioned for the first time as early as 1309. Until 1597 it stood on a mound on the Moorburg church dike, south of the site of today's church. The "old churchyard" can still be seen today and is marked by an information board. In the meadow there is a circular trench with a diameter of 90 m, with a slight elevation of approx. 0.7 m in relation to the surroundings. According to tradition, the old church stood there until 1597 (inauguration of the new church). From 1987 to 1989 archaeological excavations were carried out by the Helms Museum , during which no building remains were found, but evidence of two church buildings and a golden chalice from the 16th century. 406 medieval and three modern graves were uncovered. In addition to box-shaped coffins, seven dugout canoes were found as coffins.

Today's Evangelical Lutheran St. Maria Magdalena Church was rebuilt near the Moorburg Elbe dike and consecrated in 1597. It was rebuilt by Lorenz Dohmsen from 1684 to 1689, and from 1878 to 1879 there was another rebuilding in the neo-Gothic style according to plans by HM Brekelbaum, which was largely removed from 1906 to 1907. The baroque interior dates from 1688.

Sports

Economy and Infrastructure

The new and the old Kattwyk Bridge in Moorburg

Moorburg is cut through on stilts or a dam by the federal highway 7 . Bus route 157 connects Moorburg with the southern Hamburg district of Harburg. Bus route 250 runs through the new Elbe tunnel to Hamburg-Altona . The Kattwyk Bridge , a lift bridge for road traffic and the trains of the Hamburg Port Railway , runs over the southern Elbe River to the east . It connects Moorburg with Wilhelmsburg and the central free port area . From 2020, the Federal Motorway 26 will be built as a so-called port passage parallel to the Moorburger Damm and the Kattwyk Bridge . This will cross Moorburg from west to east and connect the A7 with the A1 .

There are two restaurants in Moorburg, one of which will reopen in April 2008. There are also haulage companies and a corner shop , as well as a few handicrafts and farms. Some artists and artisans have also settled in the village.

Moorburg power plant

Between 1974 and 2001 the Hamburgische Electricitäts-Werke (HEW) operated the Moorburg gas power plant . It had an electrical output of 1000 MW, making it one of the largest conventional power plants in Germany. The power plant was blown up in April and May 2004. The chimney of the power plant was at a height of 256 m, the highest massive construction of Hamburg (the TV tower is m high without its antenna 204).

The construction site of the Moorburg power plant in August 2012 (view from the Kattwyk Bridge)

In September 2006 the board of directors of Vattenfall Europe gave the green light for the construction of a coal-fired power station . According to the calculations at the time, this should cost around 1.7 billion euros. In 2017, the Wedel thermal power station should go offline and be replaced by the new power station in Moorburg. The preparatory construction work began in October 2007, and the immission control permit was granted in September 2008. In 2011, the costs were estimated at around 2.6 billion euros. The power plant went into operation in 2014 (Block B) and 2015 (Block A).

The project was viewed very critically from various sides, especially because of its climate damage. On the other hand, an expert report by TÜV Rheinland showed that the total CO 2 emissions would be reduced because the planned power plant would work much more efficiently than the outdated power plants to be replaced.

education

The Hamburg Senate wanted to close the Moorburg primary school in 2004, but initially decided not to do so after public protests. Organizationally, the primary school temporarily became the branch of the school in Neuenfelde. Due to insufficient registration numbers, the school was finally closed in 2007. The school has been complete since 2009, with two school wings, an administration wing and the break hall at the elbdeich cultural association. e. V. rented. The rooms are rented to artists as studios. There is a café there and cultural or other events take place in the break hall. A kindergarten and after-school care center will also remain on the school premises.
