Umzimkhulu is a city in the municipality of the same name Umzimkhulu , KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa . In 2001 it had 36,770 and in 2011 - with a significantly smaller size - only 8,399 inhabitants.

history

As early as 1820, European traders exchanged glass beads and weapons for ivory here . In 1824 the settler Henry Francis Flynn built one of the first residential buildings on the Umzimkhulu River. Later Germans and Norwegians also settled here, as did Indians who came to the country as cheap labor or traders.

At the beginning of the 20th century the city got a railway connection.

In February 1954, a Catholic diocese was established in Umzimkhulu .
