Un is a funeral doom band founded in 2012 .

history

The quartet Un, founded in Seattle in 2012, consists of the singer and guitarist Monte McCleery, the bassist Clayton Wolf, the guitarist David Wright and the drummer Alex Bytnar, who has been active in the group since Andrew Jamieson left in 2017. McCleery was diagnosed with cancer after downloading two demo recordings in 2013. Due to the therapy, the band's activity was temporarily suspended. The debut album The Tomb of All Things , released in 2015 via Black Bow Records , was written by the band during therapy and recorded after successful treatment. The album was widely noticed, especially by the English-language music press, and was mostly received positively. Upon release and positive feedback, the group began performing nationwide concerts, festival appearances, and touring the United States. After successful appearances with groups like Fister , Body Void and Usnea , the band released their second studio album Sentiment in 2018 in cooperation with Translation Loss Records . This album was as positive as its debut, again mostly in the English-language music press. This was followed in 2019 by a split EP released via Translation Loss Records , which contains a piece by Un and one of the British death-doom and sludge band Coltsblood . The EP once again received mostly positive feedback.

style

The music presented by Un is assigned to Funeral Doom. Post-rock is occasionally mentioned as a further influence . The band describes the style they play as "Aetherical Doom". In a review of the debut written for the Invisible Oranges webzine , the music is described as too multi-layered and multi-faceted to make a clear genre classification. The drumming is described as jazzy and the guttural singing as influenced by Black Metal . In other reviews, Bell Witch are often cited as a prescriptive comparison. Performers such as Evoken , Mournful Congregation and Loss are named as further possible comparative variables and influencing factors . In his review written for the Kerrang , the music journalist Chris Krovatin describes the music of Sentiment as a mixture of slow rhythms reminding of a funeral march and a reverberating psychedelic guitar playing.
