TECHO , formerly “Un techo para mi país” ( Eng . “A roof for my country”), is a Latin American non-governmental organization that uses young volunteers to fight extreme poverty in Latin America and to work for social justice together with families living in poverty .

Vision and mission

The association is committed to a fair society free from poverty, in which everyone has the opportunity to exhaust their individual capacities and to fully exercise their rights. Regardless of religion and belief, political attitude or ethnicity, the common goal is to fight extreme poverty and social inequality and to work for a more just society and equal opportunities.

history

In 1997, some students initiated an organization that is now active throughout Latin America . This was followed by engagements in El Salvador and Peru , the organization has continued to expand and is now carrying out projects in 19 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean . There are 600,000 volunteers and has built emergency housing for and with over 100,000 families.

How TECHO works

The association pursues three basic goals: To promote community development in the poor settlements, to raise awareness and social engagement, and to promote participation in political decision-making processes. The focus here is always on extremely marginalized poor areas.

The working method is divided into different steps: At the beginning, the problems of the poor settlements are identified and analyzed together with the residents of the poor settlements and the volunteers.

In the second phase, TECHO creates a dialogue platform together with the respective poor settlement so that all residents can get involved in community work and initiate and influence projects and developments. Here, solutions are jointly developed to meet the needs of the communities.

A TECHO emergency housing

The organization started the process of community development with the construction of emergency housing. These are built by volunteers and residents within a weekend. The emergency shelters are put together from prefabricated wooden modules and mean a direct, proportionate improvement in the living conditions for the families. The emergency houses are 3 × 6 meters in size and consist of wooden walls and a zinc roof with sealing foil.

In order to continue and sustainably promote the strengthening process of the communities, a committee made up of the respective residents and TECHO volunteers is formed for each poor settlement.

The main programs here are z. B. Measures to improve the education, work and health situation or infrastructural projects. Furthermore, support in the development of leadership qualities and the promotion of (small) companies, as well as the granting of microcredits for the implementation of municipal projects, are initiated.

For a long-term solution in the settlements, the association supports the residents of the slums in gaining access to state institutions so that they can stand up for their rights independently.

Countries of operation

Argentina , Bolivia , Brazil , Chile , Colombia , Costa Rica , Dominican Republic , Ecuador , El Salvador , Guatemala , Haiti , Honduras , Mexico , Nicaragua , Panama , Paraguay , Peru , Uruguay and Venezuela . There are also offices in the US and UK . In Europe, teams have been formed in Germany , Belgium , France , Switzerland , Austria and Spain since 2013 .

In January 2014, the support association “Together TECHO eV” was founded in Germany. The purpose is to draw attention to the conditions in Latin America and to provide financial support for specific projects. The association works on a national level in three areas: Fundraising, Volunteers and Communications: The fundraising area helps to support local projects in Latin America by acquiring financial and other material resources. The Volunteers department coordinates all volunteers in all areas of TECHO in Germany. They also run training courses and workshops for the volunteers. The Communications division has the task of providing information about poverty in Latin America, sensitizing society to this topic and positioning TECHO as an active NGO in public.

In addition to these three major areas of work, regional committees are being set up across Germany that draw attention to TECHO through various campaigns and events.
