The Independence Square ( Turkmen Garaşsyzlyk meýdany ) is a central place in the Turkmen capital Ashgabat .

layout

Independence Square is one of the largest squares in downtown Ashgabat. It is shaped by bodies of water, in the middle there is a star-shaped fountain. On the sides of the square there are representative buildings, which in many cases are used by state institutions. These include the Oguzkhan Palace , the official seat of the President, the Ruhyyet Palace, the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense, the National Library and the seat of the Ministry of Education. Under President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow the square was redesigned. Among other things, Berdimuhamedov had a new official residence built with the Oguzkhan Palace and relocated the arc of neutrality that had previously stood on the square to a suburb of the capital.

State guests are regularly received in the prestigious square, as international discussions and summits are mostly held in the adjacent Oguzkhan Palace. On the occasion of national holidays, such as Independence Day, military parades are held in the square.
