Unforgiving: A Northern Hymn is a Swedish survival horror game from the independent game studio Angry Demon Studios from Skövde . The game features Swedish voice overs and subtitles in various languages; including German. The German translation is by Marcel Weyers . The game is heavily inspired by Swedish folklore and Norse mythology.

Game mechanics

The game features an open world and survival horror from a first-person perspective. It is set in a forest and the player also has the opportunity to explore various huts, abandoned buildings and an abandoned mine shaft. The sparse lighting hides potential threats from the player's view and sound effects are used to trick players into questioning the presence of enemies. The artificial intelligence in the game chooses its own paths instead of repeating the same path.

action

The game begins with a nameless protagonist who wakes up tied up in her brother's car. After an accident in the forest, the two look for a way out of the forest. On the way the player learns the reason for the kidnapping by the brother; the protagonist suffers from an addiction and refuses to undergo treatment. The brother planned to force her to a treatment clinic. Brother and sister are separated at a river crossing and the protagonist has to cross a swamp area. The two are reunited on a series of railroad tracks, but the brother does not manage to escape from a one-armed troll, so that the protagonist is on her own. She now has to cope with various tasks in which she repeatedly comes across a number of creatures from Norse mythology.

monster

reception

André Linken from Gameswelt called the game a “horror insider tip at a bargain price” and praised the good feel for the contrast between shock moments and quieter passages as well as the unused Swedish mythology. On the other hand, the linear sequence of the game and the German translation, which Weyers had not yet translated again, were criticized.

Alex Ney from Survivethis praised the “good story with downright dramatic moments” as well as the “unusually dense atmosphere, skilfully threaded scares and many different mythological threats.” But the linear one was also criticized Course of the game.
