The Unidad Académica Campesina-Carmen Pampa (UAC-Carmen Pampa) is a campus of the Catholic University of Bolivia and was founded in 1993 to fight rural poverty in Bolivia. It is located in the small community of Carmen Pampa, twelve kilometers from the town of Coroico .

history

The UAC-Carmen Pampa was established on 3 October 1993 by Sister Damon Nolan, a nun of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Third Order of Franciscans . The university started as part of a consortium of rural branches of the Catholic University of Bolivia, called UACs (Unidades Académicas Campesinas), set up to teach the rural poor. In 2010 the university was declared an independent campus of the Catholic University of Bolivia. The university initially offered technical degrees in agricultural, veterinary / animal sciences and nursing. In 1998 the UAC-Carmen Pampa added a "licenciatura" to its offer. In 2003 the offer of a licenciatura degree in primary education started, in 2006 the offer of a technical degree in tourism. There is also a program to prepare for university, the so-called Pre-U.

In 1999 the Carmen Pampa Fund was established, a foundation to provide support to the UAC-Carmen Pampa. It is based in St. Paul, Minnesota.

In 2003, the US recognized the UAC-Carmen Pampa as a "best practice institution for poverty reduction". She was also recognized for her efforts to fight poverty and to improve the profitability and sovereignty of food for rural residents. In May 2011, the Education and Health Committee of the Bolivian Legislative Assembly recognized each of the UACs as a laudable institution of the State of Bolivia for their efforts in higher education.
