Unión Española SADP is a Chilean soccer team from Independencia , Santiago de Chile .

The team was founded in 1897 by Spanish immigrants and, except for 1998 and 1999, always played in the country's top football league. So far Unión Española has won the title in the Primera División six times and has won two cups . The team achieved their greatest international success when they reached the finals in 1975 in the Copa Libertadores .

In July 2008 the Spanish entrepreneur and owner of the private IE University in Segovia , Jorge Segovia, bought the club. For the equivalent of 1 million US dollars, he received all rights to the club.

Since 1922, all home games have been played at the Estadio Santa Laura . In 2008 the venue was extensively renovated and renamed Estadio Santa Laura-Universidad SEK.

CD Palestino and Audax Italiano have long been Unión Española’s rivals. The matches between these three teams are also known as colonial derby , as all three were founded by immigrants. Española is the second oldest club in the Primera División after the Santiago Wanderers .
