The Unión General de Trabajadores ( UGT ) is a Spanish union founded by Pablo Iglesias Posse in Barcelona in 1888, originally with a Marxist character.

The UGT is a member of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). In the membership list of the IGB, membership is given as 880,000 (as of November 2017).

history

The UGT had a strong political influence during the 2nd Republic , especially in Madrid. From the beginning, it was closely linked to the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party ( PSOE ), which was also founded by Pablo Iglesias in 1879 . Before and during the Spanish civil war, there were frequent conflicts between the Marxist UGT and the anarchist-oriented rival union Confederación Nacional del Trabajo .

After the end of the Franco regime, the UGT was re-approved in 1977 and is today the union with the largest number of members in Spain before the Comisiones Obreras (CC.OO.) and after the CC OO. the second highest number of union delegates.

function

In addition to trade union work, the organization now also functions as an employment agency, arranging jobs and striving to integrate people who have difficulties in finding a regular job. The UGT competes with state employment agencies and other public organizations, some of which are also in the hands of trade unions. A special target group of the UGT's employment agency are immigrants .
