International Union of Radio Science

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Union of Radio Science URSI ( French Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale, URSI ) is an international association of scientists for research into all aspects of radio technology including its applications and the propagation of radio waves.

history

The URSI was founded in 1919 at the founding meeting of the International Research Council as one of the earliest international scientific unions, and even goes back to a Commision Internationale de Télégraphie sans Fil founded in 1913 . Today it is one of 26 scientific unions in the International Council for Science ICSU. The field of work includes electromagnetic waves in the frequency range from extremely long natural waves ( Whistler ) to beyond the optical range.

Originally, URSI was only interested in the various mechanisms of the propagation of radio waves for telecommunication as well as the important areas of the atmosphere , namely the troposphere and ionosphere . Later other topics from radio astronomy to the application of radar were added, more recently also technical principles and the biological effect of radio waves. These topics are dealt with in ten commissions and dealt with every three years at the URSI General Assembly. URSI is the publisher of the quarterly magazine "Radio Science Bulletin".

URSI played a leading role in the preparation and implementation of the International Geophysical Year 1957/58.
