The following still needs to be improved:

The Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) is a nonprofit organization which advocates the "respectful procurement" (English "Sourcing with Respect") of ingredients . The members of the organization undertake to promote the conservation of biodiversity in the procurement of their ingredients , to respect traditional knowledge and to ensure fair distribution along the entire supply chain in accordance with the Ethical BioTrade standard. Members also undertake to participate in the UEBT verification system, which includes verification by independent third parties against the Ethical BioTrade Standard, the development of a work plan for gradual compliance with the Ethical BioTrade Standard for all natural products, and the commitment to continuous improvement as soon as compliance is observed of the Ethical BioTrade Standard is achieved. The members submit to regular reviews by independent third parties. The UEBT certifies more than 100 different ingredients. Companies must develop a "Biodiversity Action Plan" for every natural ingredient they source in order to achieve and maintain their UEBT certification.

history

The UEBT was founded in May 2007 in Geneva . The establishment was a reaction to several developments. First, the Convention on Biological Diversity (short CBD , German "Convention on Biological Diversity") stated that additional efforts were required to reach the private sector. Recognizing the strong link between the economy and biodiversity, as well as industry's reliance on biodiversity, the CBD emphasized the key role the private sector plays in sustainable use. To achieve this, the idea of the UEBT was brought into being. Thus the UEBT followed the efforts of the BioTrade Initiative of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development ( United Nations Conference on Trade and Development , UNCTAD). This was initiated in Cartagena (Colombia) in 1992 to help make biodiversity a strategy for sustainable development . On May 8, 2007 a meeting of the UEBT founding members took place, at which the statutes were approved. In December 2008, the CBD and UEBT signed a letter of intent to encourage the companies involved in BioTrade to adopt and promote good practice.

default

The UEBT provides a standard for the ethical trade in natural resources. The members undertake to adhere to the standard that is applied in all of their companies and along the entire supply chain. For this purpose, the UEBT has published a detailed guide together with the Global Nature Fund (GNF) , which supports companies in strategic planning.

The standard is based on the following seven principles:

  1. Conservation of biodiversity
  2. Sustainable use of biodiversity
  3. Profit sharing between companies and communities through the use of biodiversity
  4. Traceability to identify the origins of the natural ingredients
  5. Compliance with national and international regulations
  6. Adequate working conditions for employees and ensuring local food security
  7. No “ land grabbing ”, instead measures to avoid illegal use

Biodiversity Barometer

The UEBT's annually published Biodiversity Barometer provides information about the development of consumer awareness of biological diversity. The 2018 report brings insights from a decade of research into biodiversity awareness among more than 60,000 consumers in sixteen countries. The 2018 consumer survey shows that awareness of biodiversity among consumers in Germany is growing steadily. In the past ten years, the number of people who have heard of biodiversity has increased from 29 percent to 53 percent. According to the Biodiversity Barometer, the German population has a strong personal relationship with biodiversity. 71 percent of those questioned are certain that "it affects them personally" when biological diversity disappears. For those surveyed, the preservation of biodiversity is important for their personal well-being and that of future generations: More than 80 percent say that biodiversity improves their quality of life. When asked which brands respect people's wellbeing and biodiversity, Alnatura was mentioned by 17 percent of those surveyed and was therefore mentioned most often. Weleda comes first among female consumers ; 21 percent of them know the brand.

The UEBT has different types of members: brands, producers and processing companies, mainly in the cosmetics , pharmaceuticals and food sectors .
