Union of Horodło

The Horodło Union was a dynastic alliance between Poland and Lithuania formed in the village of Horodło in 1413 . Władysław II. Jagiełło , King and of Poland, and the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Vytautas , concluded an agreement in Horodło on October 2, 1413, which more firmly linked the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and at the same time the Catholic Church in Lithuania and the Lithuanian Church gave the lower nobility certain privileges . It complemented earlier Polish-Lithuanian agreements on the Union of Krewo and Union of Vilnius and Radom . This deepened the dynastic alliance between the two states and laid the foundations for the predominance of the Polish-Lithuanian element in the future multi-ethnic state. With the union, the privileges of the Catholic nobility were enshrined and the Ruthenian boyars of the Greek Orthodox creed were kept out of power.

The agreement represented a further step towards the recognition of the Lithuanian nobility , which was placed on an equal footing with the Polish nobility in this union of two sovereign states.

In the agreement, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was also granted its own grand duke and parliament . The Polish and Lithuanian knights should in future consult together on all important matters - for example the election of kings and grand dukes. The Lithuanian and Ruthenian nobility got the same rights as the Polish Szlachta , which led to the fact that Ruthenian and Lithuanian noble families were admitted to the Polish Szlachta and noble coats of arms were introduced into Lithuania .

The following noble families received coats of arms for the first time :

Awdaniec ( Abdank ), Bogorya, Ciołek, Dębno, Doliwa, Dołęga, Drya (Dryja), Działosza, Gierałt (Osmoróg), Godziemba , Gryf, Grzymała, Janina, Jastrzębiec , Jelot Mezyca, Papaczors (Topacz), (Kuszaba) Leliwa, Lis, Łabędź, Lodzia, Nałęcz , Nowina , Odrowąż, Ogończyk, Oksza, Ossoria, Pierzchała, Pobóg, Pomian, Poraj, Półkozic, Rawicz (Rawa), Rola, Sulima , Syrokomla, Szreniawa, Świnka, Topór , Trąby, Trzaska, Wadwicz, Wąż, Zadora, Zaremba.
