Master of Fogdö

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The master of Fogdö ( Swedish Fogdömästaren) is a medieval painter who is unknown by name and who worked in Denmark and southern Sweden around 1410–40 . In Denmark's cultural canon 2006 it is listed under the name Unionsmesteren .

Naming and work

Adoration of the Magi (15th century) Nødebo Church

The unknown master of Fogdö got his emergency name from the wall paintings he created in the church of Fogdö in the municipality of Strängnäs , which is on Lake Mälaren in the province of Södermanland in central Sweden. The wall paintings in the cathedral of the nearby town of Strängnäs are said to come from the same artist , as well as works in the vicinity in the churches of Toresunds, also in the municipality of Strängnäs and in Runtuna in the municipality of Nyköping .

Since the master of Fogdö also created works in Denmark, he is also known as the Union master ( Swedish Union masters, Danish Union masters ). This name goes back to the political union between Denmark and Sweden, the Kalmar Union .

Another name, Undløse-Meister ( Danish Undløsemesteren), is used in Denmark after his work in the Church of Undløse in northern Zealand . Only remnants of his work have survived in Rørby Church; in Nødebo Church he is named for the paintings in the tower.

style

The Master of Fogdö is counted as part of the Mälardaler School, an art-historical group of medieval Scandinavian painters who all created works in the region around Lake Mälarsee (Mälardal) and also in Finland and who followed the same style as the Master of Fogdö . Even if some of the other painters still follow a more folk style of painting, a more or less great influence of the beautiful style emerging in their time in Europe can be seen in the works of all these artists , which suggests contacts with painters or works of this renewing style. The style of the master of Fogdö, for example, is somewhat reminiscent of that of master Bertram , an important Gothic painter in northern Germany around 1400.
