Blah Blah Blah is a dance-pop , electro -pop and rap song by the American singer and rapper Kesha . It was released in February 2010 as the second single from their debut album Animal . The piece is a cooperation with the American electro-pop group 3OH! 3 .

The single became a commercial success, reaching the top five in Australia and Canada and the top ten in the US and New Zealand . Blah Blah Blah sold over two million units in the US and was awarded five platinum records .

Origin and inspiration

Blah Blah Blah was written by Kesha along with Neon Hitch , Sean Foreman and Benny Blanco , Blanco produced the song. Kesha said the idea for the song originally came up during a discussion among the songwriters. They discussed the disadvantages of the female sex in relation to the male sex.

"The song came about when the people that wrote it - me, Benny Blanco, Neon Hitch and [3OH! 3's] Sean Foreman - all got in a room, and they were talking about how chicks talk too much, [...] And me and Neon were like, 'No, no, no, guys talk too much, […] So, we had this war of who were more obnoxious, chicks or dudes. And the song kind of came around from that conversation. I think I make a pretty fair point both in this video and in the song, that dudes are way more annoying. "

“The song came about when the people who wrote it - me, Benny Blanco, Neon Hitch, and Sean Foreman [from 3OH! 3] - were all in the room talking about chicks talking too much. [...] And me and Neon said: "No, no, no, guys talk too much". [...] So we had this argument about who was more obnoxious, chicks or guys. And the song somehow came about through that conversation. I think I make it pretty clear in this video and in the song that guys are clearly more annoying. "

Musical and content

Blah Blah Blah is a moderately fast (120 bpm ) dance pop song. In the individual stanzas, Kesha raps while she sings the chorus. The chorus, in particular, is shaped electronically by the strong influence of auto-tune effects and synthesizers . The drum computers in the verses in between are supposed to create an R&B feeling. Blah Blah Blah was written in D minor, with Kesha's vocal range in the song ranging from D 3 to D 5 .

The song describes Kesha's thoughts about men and how she lets their attempts at flirting ricochet off her. She clearly shows that she doesn't want anyone who makes big speeches and bores her with it. The title of the song is especially clear in the chorus. This is how Kesha sings the lines:

Stop ta-ta-talking that
Blah, blah, blah
Think you'll be getting this?
Nah, nah, nah
Not in the back of my
Car-ah-ah
If you keep talking that
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah

Stop talking.
Blah, blah, blah.
Do you think you can get this?
No,
no , no , not in the back seat of
my car,
if you keep talking.
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

referring to her body and sex. The text contains some vulgar expressions and allusions. There are only a few - mostly female - performers who deliberately refrain from describing sex in order to provoke and irritate the audience. With this song Kesha represents her self-determined character and thus also sets an example against the well-known gender order . According to the song and Kesha, men and women should be treated equally and not one should be favored or disadvantaged. Nevertheless, Blah Blah Blah performs a "dance on the line between naughty and simply repulsive."

criticism

The critics received Blah Blah Blah with mixed opinions. The song was praised above all for its memorable refrain, Kesha's character, which gives this song its spice, and the successful implementation of the synthesizers. The song is also refreshingly varied through the combination of rap and dance-pop. 3OH! 3's performance was heavily criticized. Most described their involvement in the song as unnecessary. 3OH! 3 goes completely under in comparison with Kesha and is hardly or not at all noticed due to her dominant nature. Furthermore, the offensive text scares off some listeners.

BBC's Fraser McAlpine said it is a sign of cultural advancement if a modern pop girl can sing a song that is as filthy as the kind of songs a man of her own rank would risk. He was impressed by the song and compared the hookline "You tah-tah-tawkin 'that Blah Blah Blah" with Lady Gaga's gibberish in Bad Romance - in a rural village girl version.

Jim Farber of the New York Daily News said the song could become "The [...] Anthem of the Year".

About.com's Bill Lamb recorded the song well and commented on the content: "Let's cut to the chase here, Kesha says," Shut up, let's have sex. " That is the complete gist of, Blah Blah Blah 'and most likely no one could deliver it more effectively and in a more catchy fashion. Throw in a sea of synths and drum machines and this is the second major hit from Kesha. Hedonism has a clear champion and now a new theme song. "(German:" Let's get to the point. Kesha says: 'Shut up, let's have sex'. That is the whole core of 'Blah Blah Blah' and no one else can make it more effective and catchy. Throw in a flood of synthesizers and drum computers and this is Kesha's second huge hit. Hedonism has a clear master and now a new title track. ")

Ann Powers of the Los Angeles Times criticized Kesha's producers for endlessly editing, dubbing and multiplying her voice until it "sounded half like a chipmunk, half like a hot doll in a Japanese comic". There are moments in Animal that are almost as experimental as a collective Animal recording, only that instead of a few wistful Brian Wilson-loving artists who are the focus of the song, a girl rolls her eyes and pops a bubble gum.

Melanie Bertoldi from Billboard Magazine also thinks that the rap verses from 3OH! 3 slow down the song's momentum too much and don't really take shape due to Kesha's aggressive nature. However, if danceability were the criterion, this song is another ace up the sleeve of the It girl.

Andrew Burgess of MusicOMH said, "3OH! 3 makes a weak attempt to affirm the fact of male superiority, but Kesha comes across as so contagiously dominant, it's hard to take the guy seriously."

Mayer Nissim from Digital Spy gave the song two out of five stars and critically stated that Blah Blah Blah was far inferior to Kesha's first hit, TiK ToK . Blah Blah Blah is also very memorable, but not enough. "Ke $ ha claims she's taking a table-turning potshot at chauvinistic male rappers, but in truth her lines are just too thick to deliver. It's a point further undermined by the presence of brain-dead electropop duo 3OH! 3. When it comes to Ke $ ha's place in the filth-pop pantheon, Princess Superstar out-smuts her, Peaches has bigger balls, Lolita Storm offer much more sexual aggression and mainstream rival Lady GaGa has a far superior line in sex puns. "( German: "Kesha claims she got a hit against chauvinistic male rappers, but the truth is that her lines are simply too thick to get across. It is an argument that is reinforced by the presence of the brain-dead electro-pop duo 3OH! 3. When it comes to Kesha's place in the dirty pop hall of fame, Princess Superstar spots her, Peaches has bigger balls, Lolita Storm offers a lot more sexual aggression, and mainstream rival Lady Gaga has a far higher level of sex. Word games. ")

Commercial win

Without even being released as a single, Blah Blah Blah rose to number 26 on the Irish charts, number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 3 on the Canadian Hot 100 . The reason was the high number of downloads of Blah Blah Blah and the album Animal in January 2010. In the United States, the newcomer was number 2 on the Hot Digital Songs Charts , with 206,000 downloads in one week. In New Zealand, the single debuted at number 7 on the charts. In Australia, the single also reached number 7 on the ARIA charts in the week of its release , making it the highest entry of the week. After a few weeks the single reached number 3 on the ARIA charts and was certified platinum in Australia. Blah Blah Blah made his debut in Europe on February 7, 2010 at number 11 in the British singles chart .

The single became Kesha's second top 30 hit in Ireland and her second top 10 single in the US and Canada. As of April 2010, over 2 million units of the song had been sold in the United States and Canada. Blah Blah Blah was thus awarded double platinum in both countries. In May 2010, the single was awarded gold in New Zealand .

Music video

Background and reception

The director of music video led Brendan Malloy . The video was shot in Los Angeles in January 2010 and had its world premiere on February 23, 2010 on Kesha's Vevo website . All 3OH! 3 artists have an appearance in the music video.

Melanie Bertoldi of Billboard said the video was "quite entertaining". About.com's Bill Lamb called the music video Kesha's Poker Face , and again compares her to Lady Gaga, who also released her second single, Pokerface. It is the moment for Kesha to prove herself as a serious pop artist with this video.

content

The video deals with four different cases, in each of which a man experiences Kesha's temperament. The first scene takes place in a nightclub where her first admirer meets with her. She takes off his jeans, gags him with tape, describes him as an idiot and leaves him there. The second disturbs her in an arcade during a game so that she pushes him aside. When the third applicant tries to serenade her, she stuffs his mouth with paper. The last scene takes place in a bowling center where Kesha discovers that her companion is wearing a toupee . She stuffs this into his mouth as well. Between the scenes, during the chorus, Kesha hops up and down several meters on a kind of pulling device or stages himself on a bowling alley.

Live performances

The first live performance of the song took place on November 2, 2009 on the station MTV , in the show MTV Push . Kesha then sang the song on January 18, 2010 on MuchOnDemand , which was broadcast by MuchMusic , and in a censored version on March 17, 2010 along with 3OH! 3 live on the ninth season of American Idol .

In the UK , Kesha took two opportunities to promote the song. The first live performance was on February 18, 2010 on Alan Carr: Chatty Man . This was followed by a live appearance on GMTV on February 19. She also sang the song live for BBC's Radio 1's Big Weekend . At the dance show So You Think You Can Dance Australia , she presented the hit in Australia .

In Germany she performed on April 24, 2010 at Willkommen bei Mario Barth .
