The University Library (UB) Ilmenau is the largest technical library in Thuringia and is part of the Technical University (TU) Ilmenau . Its primary task is to provide the university with literature and information for study, research and teaching. In addition, it is available to all citizens, public institutions, commercial enterprises and research institutions throughout Germany for scientific and professional purposes as well as for training and further education.

The library is a single-tier library and is organizationally subdivided into the departments of media processing and use, the specialist departments and the staff units. The library's services in connection with academic publishing are bundled under the umbrella of ilmedia (Ilmenau Media Services). The university archive of the TU Ilmenau is organizationally affiliated with the library .

use

The library is located at the following locations:

  • Main library (in the Leibnizbau), Langewiesener Straße 37, opening times: Monday-Friday 8 am–8pm (during examination periods 8 am–10pm), Saturdays 9 am–5pm
  • Curie library (in the Curie building, room 118), Weimarer Straße 25, opening times: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 12pm to 4pm; Wednesdays and Fridays 9 am–1pm

Both locations are mainly open access libraries with a systematic listing. The open access holdings are divided into 17 specialist groups and within these are set up according to the Regensburg Association Classification (RVK). The Curie library only contains holdings in the fields of mathematics, physics and chemistry. In total, around a third of the entire inventory is housed in magazines and can be made available for use within a maximum of 24 hours. Computer workstations for catalog research and internet use as well as copiers, printers and scanners are available in the reading rooms. Each of the 650 or so reading places is equipped with power and IT connections. WiFi is also available in the entire reading room area. A reading device for microforms is also available for use, and re-enlargement from microforms is offered as required.

When entering the library, the usage regulations are accepted. Everyone is permitted for general use. The loan is only possible with a valid library card. This user ID is either the chip card (thoska +) that is issued to students and employees of the TU, or an ID issued by the library. The use of the university library and the borrowing of books from the library are free of charge. Another free service is the delivery service, which enables all registered users to make literature available quickly and easily, sometimes electronically. Fees have to be paid for making books available from other libraries ( interlibrary loan ). The UB Ilmenau takes part in the accelerated interlibrary loan through the Joint Library Network (GBV) .

As a member of the GBV, the library uses the OCLC PICA library system, and LBS 3 / LBS 4 is used as the library software.

Since January 2013 the library has been offering the "Ilmenauer Discovery Tool" (IDT) based on vufind and GBV Zentral, which can be used to search for literature beyond the local holdings. The local availability is displayed if applicable.

The BibApp IL can also be used to access the local catalog, the union catalog and the user account while on the move using mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. The app also provides information on news and events.

As part of its public relations work, the Ilmenau University Library contributes to the cultural offerings of the university in the city and region of Ilmenau with a diverse program of events and exhibitions.

The orientation of the inventory essentially follows the teaching and research orientation of the Technical University of Ilmenau. At the TU there are five faculties of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and information technology, computer science and automation, economics and media, as well as the mathematics and natural sciences faculty and several cross-faculty institutes. As a scientific universal library, the Ilmenau University Library also offers basic holdings on all other areas of knowledge for use in addition to the focus areas. The inventory is generally divided into textbook collections, specialist books, journals and the media library . In addition to the conventional, electronic offers such as e-books, e-journals and databases are increasingly appearing in large numbers. All media are listed in the online catalog and the discovery system of the University Library.

The inventory includes:

  • 627,669 books, newspapers, magazines (total bookbinding units),
  • 5,030 printed standards,
  • electronically all current DIN standards and VDI guidelines,
  • 11,658 micromaterials,
  • 68,571 digital holdings (excluding electronic magazines and newspapers),
  • 145 electronic databases,
  • 358 printed and 27,574 licensed electronic ongoing magazine and newspaper subscriptions.

Selected services

Seminars

The library regularly offers seminars on Internet and literature research for special target groups and subjects: computer science, engineering, mathematics and natural sciences, media studies, economics and law. The offer is supplemented by seminars on literature research and management with Citavi and EndNote , which are also available as webinars. In some cases, individual events are held in cooperation with the TU lecturers as part of the introduction to scientific work, or individual appointments can be made with smaller groups. The library also takes part in events organized by the Children's University and offers guided tours and research training specifically for school groups. The library also uses the low-threshold format of the Coffee Lecture to provide brief guidance on topics relevant to the library and research.

Standards display point

As part of a Thuringia consortium, the Ilmenau University Library maintains a digital display point for the German set of standards. The digital holdings of this display point are available to users via the computers in the library rooms and from all computers with access from the university network of the TU Ilmenau. The Perinorm database provides access to the full texts of all currently valid DIN standards , draft standards including pre-standards and supplements as well as the VDI guidelines . Exceptions are all DIN standards with VDE identification , which are available in paper form in the library and can be viewed there.

Ilmedia

With ilmedia (Ilmenau Media Services) the UB Ilmenau bundles all activities and services for scientific publications from the TU Ilmenau. As part of ilmedia, TU employees can use five service areas: university bibliography , electronic publishing, university publishing, open access publication funds and support for plagiarism detection.

The publications of the members of the Technical University of Ilmenau are listed in the university bibliography. The publications must have been created in connection with an activity at the university. If the university library owns the publications, the associated signature or even a link to the electronic full text is included.

The UB Ilmenau uses the Digital Library of Thuringia (DBT) as a platform for electronic publishing, the structure and technical development of which it operates together with the Thuringian University and State Library (ThULB) Jena. In accordance with international standards, scientific and science-related publications published via this repository receive permanent identifiers in the form of Uniform Resource Names (URN) and are recorded in the local, national and international identification instruments.

The University Library of Ilmenau has been operating the Ilmenau University Press for scientists at the university since the beginning of 2006 . In addition to the inexpensive publication in bookstores, the publisher also offers the possibility of offering publications in parallel in electronic form via the Digital Library Thuringia (DBT) in line with the Open Access concept.

Building on the possibility of publishing scientific publications using the open access model via ilmedia, the Technical University of Ilmenau set up a publication fund in 2015 to support publication in open access journals by paying article fees . The fund, which is conceptually and organisationally managed by the university library , is funded by the German Research Foundation as part of start-up funding. With the "Declaration of the Technical University of Ilmenau on the free access to scientific research results" adopted in 2014, the TU Ilmenau is committed to open access publishing as well as free access to research data. The university library therefore also offers consulting services on research data management.

In order to prevent plagiarism and ensure good scientific practice, the Ilmenau University Library supports students and lecturers with training events on correct quoting and offers for plagiarism control. Since the end of 2014, the library has also been using an automated test procedure that is available to teaching staff at the TU Ilmenau after registering.

history

The Thuringian Technical Center Ilmenau was founded in 1894. The technical center was later named engineering school (1926) and finally technical college for electrical engineering and mechanical engineering (1950).

With the establishment of the University of Electrical Engineering in Ilmenau in 1953, the library also began its work. Initially housed in an attic, the library was able to move to another building as early as 1954 and accommodate inventory and employees in several rooms. The university founded institute libraries which, with the support of the central university library, learned to organize themselves and managed their own budget for the procurement of books. At the beginning of 1955, the first usage regulations for main and institute libraries came into force. In the following years the library firmly established itself as an important infrastructure facility at the university.

In the 1960s the library was centralized again and the institute libraries were closed. After the electrical engineering college was renamed the Ilmenau Technical University in 1963, the library became the library of the Ilmenau Technical University. In 1968 there was a complete restructuring towards a single-tier library system. The subject catalog was turned into a specialist group catalog , and the magazine literature was organized according to Numerus Currens .

The 1970s were marked by further structural and technical changes. Among other things, the textbook collection and the open access lending facility were set up and new usage regulations were adopted, and EDP-supported title entry for theses and regular user training were introduced.

In the years 1980 to 1989, the services were expanded to include international interlibrary loan, and the opening times were continuously expanded and adjusted. At the location of the Precision Mechanics, Optics and Electronics Technology Center in Suhl, the library opened a branch in 1983, which existed until the location was closed in 2002.

At the beginning of the 1990s, new restructuring was necessary, it was switched to computerized title recordings, the library officially became the university library and moved to the building at Langewiesener Straße 37 in 1994. At the end of the 1990s, automatic loan booking was introduced and the holdings were organized according to RVK .

Electronic services in particular have been expanded since 2000. The online interlibrary loan system was established, databases were licensed across the campus, the DIN standards made electronically accessible and ilmedia was founded. From the end of 2008 to the beginning of 2010, the main library building was extensively rebuilt. The stocks, employees and usage moved to an alternate quarter during the work. The main focus of the renovation work was on merging the holdings and employees previously distributed across the city, as well as improving the conditions of use of the University Library. For example, individual and group work rooms were created, the number of reading places increased and the IT infrastructure completely renewed. The employees from the branch offices could be brought together again in one building, which above all resulted in an acceleration of business processes and thus an improvement in the quality of service.

The university archive, which has existed since the university was founded, has been an organizational part of the library since 2015.
