The University Library Siegen is a scientific institution of the University of Siegen . As the central operating unit, it provides scientists and students with literature and information for research, teaching and studying. As the only larger academic library in the region, it is open to all interested citizens for professional and personal information and further training.

History and organization

The library was established on August 1, 1972. It took over 141,000 volumes from previous institutions, including scientific and technical works from the 19th century from the former Wiesenbauschule Siegen.

From the beginning , the library was designed as a single-layer library system, which is characterized by centralized procurement and cataloging of the holdings. About 90% of all books and magazines are freely accessible in the main library and in five branch libraries. This guarantees direct technical and thematic access to the relevant information for the respective faculties or subjects. The inventory is based on the North Rhine-Westphalian University Library System (GHBS).

The directors of the University Library Siegen since 1972:

  • Walter Barton (1972-1987)
  • Hansjochen Hancke (1988–1997)
  • Werner Reinhardt (1997-2015)
  • Jochen Johannsen (since October 2015)

Stocks

The library's range of information includes around 1.2 million monographs and volumes of journals, 2,100 printed journals and a large number of audio-visual media. In addition, the university library offers access to an extensive range of electronic journals and e-books. The entire inventory has been cataloged according to both formal and factual aspects and is fully documented in web-based catalogs.

The university library selectively collects the regional literature on the Siegerland and a narrow selection of the neighboring regions ( Bergisches Land , Sauerland , Wittgensteiner Land , Dillkreis , Ederhochland, Westerwald ). The Jung-Stilling-Archiv of the Jung-Stilling-Gesellschaft eV has been kept within the Siegerland Collection since 2000 .

The university archive has been part of the university library since 2004.
