The University of the People (UoPeople) is a US, non-profit online university based in Pasadena , California , US. It was founded in January 2009 by Ashoka scholar Shai Reshef. This university is accredited and recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDoED), the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), and the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC). She was also recognized by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE).

In December 2018, over 18,000 students from 200 countries were enrolled. Since February 2014 it has been accredited as the world's first free online university. Please note that there are still costs for enrollment and exams.

The language of instruction is English. An Arabic version has already been announced.

The facility operates on an annual budget of $ 1.2 million and with the help of a global network of volunteers. The latter come from academic institutions, companies and organizations. In the long term, the university should be able to support itself independently. A large part of the financing comes from sponsors from industry. Another source of income are registration and examination fees.

Requirements for enrollment

Currently (August 2016) the following three requirements must be met for enrollment:

  1. Age of majority (18 years and older)
  2. Graduation
  3. English certificate (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL, CAE etc.)

Costs for students

Students pay a registration fee of USD 60. Furthermore, a processing fee of 100 or 200 USD (the latter for the master’s degree) per examination is required. In total, a student must pass up to 40 exams per course. Students can apply for scholarships. Most scholarships are brokered, i.e. financed by third-party funds.

The costs will be paid gradually via PayPal or Western Union at the time of the checks.

Learning method

The learning process is based on a self-learning process using materials from the public domain, which is then consolidated using various methods. In general, the following aspects are processed weekly:

  1. Study of the materials
  2. Answering and discussing a question (with fellow students)
  3. Further question in essay format (assessed by fellow students in the following week)
  4. Multiple choice self quiz
  5. Reflection in the learning diary
  6. Learning objective control (every three weeks including final exam)

In general, the institution builds heavily on peer review and feedback.
