Universo (Spanish for "universe") is a pop song written and interpreted by Blas Cantó . Cantó will represent Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

background

Cantó was selected by the Spanish broadcaster RTVE in October 2019 to represent Spain in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. After the broadcaster had relied on public selection via Operación Triunfo for the past two years , it returned to an internal decision. The music video was released on January 30, 2020, while the cover was first shown a week earlier. On January 31, the song was released digitally.

The contribution was selected from 50 songs. It was written by Cantó with Dangelo Ortega, Ash Hicklin, Dan Hammond and Maciej Mikolaj Trybulec. The latter two led the production.

Text and music

The song is held at a medium tempo and can be assigned to the genre of synthpop . According to Cantó, he wrote the song at a moment in his life when he hadn't raised his voice out of fear, but thought it was wrong in retrospect. He then asked the universe for forgiveness.

Cantó also wants to record the song in other languages.

Music video

The music video was shot in Lanzarote and Tenerife . Cristian Velasco directed the film.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

As part of the so-called "Big Five", Spain would have qualified directly for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest, which was to take place on May 16, 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled. Nicole Refsing was to design the choreography for the performance. The background singers were introduced in March, consisting of Pedro Elipe, Héctor Artiles, Daira Monzón, Irene Risolia and Dángelo Ortega.
