Unix System Laboratories

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Unix System Laboratories (USL) in Murray Hill, New Jersey were originally part of Bell Labs . The USL were then integrated into the UNIX Software Operation , also a division of Bell Laboratories, in 1990 . At that time, Unix development and licensing took place in Short Hills (New Jersey).

USL and Novell formed the Univel joint venture from 1991 , which developed the first version of UnixWare . In 1992 USL was purchased by Novell with all Unix ownership, rights and licensing agreements. The USL then moved to Florham Park, New Jersey. In late 1995, Novell's Unix business was sold to Santa Cruz Operation (SCO, now Tarantella, Inc. ). In 2001 the company Caldera took over several business areas of the SCO and renamed itself in August 2002 to the SCO Group . In the earlier USL, Unix development continues.
