Uno Cygnaeus
Uno Cygnaeus (also Cygnäus , born October 12, 1810 in Tavastehus , † January 2, 1888 in Helsingfors ) was a Finnish teacher and state school inspector.
Cygnaeus is known as the "father of the Finnish elementary school ". His idea of the general school system originally came from Germany. Cygnaeus considered music education to be a very important subject. In his opinion, the repertoire of music lessons should include both secular and spiritual modes. Cygnaeus was also the founder of handicraft classes (Slöjd) in Scandinavia.
His brother Fredrik Cygnaeus was a Swedish-speaking poet.
