Unspunnensteinstossen (1981)

The Unspunnenstein is an 83.5 kg stone that has been used at the traditional Unspunnen Festival in Interlaken and other stone throwing competitions since 1808 . The competitor must run up and try to push him as far as possible. The stone also became known because it was stolen from the museum of the Jungfrau region by Jurassic separatists ( Béliers ) in 1984 .

history

An alpine shepherd festival took place on the Unspunnenmatte in 1805. A stone weighing 184 pounds was struck; this stone can no longer be found today. In 1808 the festival was held a second time and a new stone weighing 167 pounds was thrown. It was then apparently kept and passed on by a family.

On April 18, 1905, Adolf Pfahrer from Interlaken presented the stone to the Interlaken gymnastics club. It was the stone from 1808. The gymnastics club has been the owner since that day. In 1947 the Swiss Wrestling Association claimed the Unspunnenstein as its property. However, the deed of gift proves that the gymnastics club Interlaken is the legal owner. The original stone was last struck in 1981 at an Unspunnen festival; on June 3, 1984 it was stolen by the Jura Béliers from the Interlaken Tourist Museum in Unterseen . Willy Zimmermann from the Interlaken gymnastics club first contacted the Jura Béliers in writing in 1984/85. In 1985 a stone was found in the Grimsel area that can serve as a replica. The stone was processed and given its original shape and weight of 83.5 kilograms.

At the Federal Wrestling and Alpine Festival in Sion the replica of Unspunnensteins came in 1986 for the first time used. The replica has been on display in the UBS counter hall in Interlaken since 1989 . A first photo of the real Unspunnen stone appeared in 1993. In 1999, Willy Zimmermann tried again to contact the Béliers in writing and by telephone. A committee for the «recovery of the Unspunnen stone» was founded in 2000.

On August 12, 2001, the stone, wrapped as “candy”, was returned to the Marché Concours in Saignelégier , where it was received by Shawne Fielding , the official ambassador of the Expo.02 national exhibition . In the meantime, however, twelve European stars, the emblem of the Béliers and December 6, 1992 (the date of the federal referendum on the European Economic Area ) had been carved into the stone.

The return was only approved by some of the Béliers, because from the point of view of Jean-Marc Baume and other activists, the Jura was still not completely free, as the southern Jura remained with the canton of Bern. The processing has made the stone around two kilograms lighter, which is why the replica is still used.

Four years later, on August 20, 2005, two weeks before the Unspunnen Festival, strangers stole the stone in the Hotel Victoria-Jungfrau for the second time and left behind a paving stone with the Jura coat of arms.
