As a former iron hammer mill, the Unterhammer property is an annex of the Trippstadt community in the Kaiserslautern district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It is an industrial monument from the beginning of the industrial history of the Palatinate.

Appearance

The Unterhammer is now made up of five buildings: the manor house, the farm house (formerly known as the watch house ), the two stables (formerly coal shed) and the turbine house . The coal barn and hammer mill , which were later replaced by a puddling mill , were located in the current stables right next to the flow of the Moosalb . A medical fitness studio is now located in this building.

All buildings were neglected after being abandoned as workplaces and threatened to deteriorate. Other buildings that were on the property, e.g. B. the workers' apartments or the puddling plant were demolished in the 1960s. In 1975 the Unterhammer went into private ownership and was finally acquired by the current owners in 1997. They have renovated the farmhouse and the outdoor facilities and manage the ensemble as a café, brewery and health center.

Thanks to historical documents, the old production facilities and even the individual production steps can still be identified. The buildings are under monument protection and are among the most important cultural monuments in the Kaiserslautern district . A small park informs about the history of the old industrial site with boards.

history

Gienanth company emblem (a "G" can be seen on the anvil), from the grave of August von Gienanth, Kaiserslautern main cemetery. From 1822 until his death in 1829, he was head of the local company.

Not only its technical, but also its socio-historical history is remarkable. The Unterhammer near Trippstadt was just one of several production facilities that existed across the Palatinate. Starting with ore extraction and smelting through to the manufacture of a wide variety of iron products - shaped, cast or rolled - the company was organized almost independently. Road construction, goods transport, wood extraction, landscape maintenance and forestry were just as much part of the company's tasks as the establishment and maintenance of what is now Germany's oldest company health insurance fund.

In 1724, Baron Ludwig Anton von Hacke (1682–1752) founded the local iron hammer mill, which was passed on to the Gienanth family on lease in 1772 and then on sale in 1808 .

The “mansion” always functioned as the core of each production facility - here the iron processing facility in Trippstadt. It was the headquarters and residence of the patron or, later, one of his sons, who in turn handed over the management of the company to their descendants.

After being abandoned as an iron production facility in 1870, the buildings were used as a civil servants' rest home after a renovation. In 1944, during the Second World War , the Kaiserslautern Municipal Hospital established a maternity hospital there. Subsequently, the workers' welfare organization used the "Unterhammer" as a sanatorium until around 1960.
