The motor tug Unterwalden was the most powerful ship in a series of three four-screw tugs operated by Schweizerische Reederei AG in Basel . The other two tugs in the class were the Schwyz and the Uri , each with 3600 hp. They were the most powerful motor tugs on the Rhine .
construction
The hull, which was divided into nine watertight compartments, was made of sheet steel, the frames and bulkheads were riveted, and the superstructure was largely electrically welded. The crew's quarters were below deck in the fore and aft, followed by two diesel tanks with 48 m³ each. In the middle of the ship was the 16 m long engine room with the four main engines. The propeller shafts of the inner machines were 40 m long and those of the outer 33 m. The propellers had a diameter of 1850 mm and ran in specially shaped tunnels. Next to the engine room were three more diesel tanks, each with 28 m³, as well as various oil tanks.
In the superstructure were the apartments for the captain and the first machinist with eat-in kitchens, bathrooms and toilets as well as the crew kitchen and a lounge with stairs to the bedrooms below. Eight cable winches with up to 1100 m of towing wires in various strengths were located behind the superstructure. The traction in the Middle Rhine was around 13,000 tons.
drive
The drive consisted of four Sulzer - two-stroke diesel engines 9TD29 with nine cylinders. The machines had a bore of 290 mm and a stroke of 500 mm. At a speed of 340 revolutions per minute, they made 1,000 hp and were reversible. The compressed air for starting and reversing was stored in eight containers, six 800, one 500 and one 250 liters. The steering position for all four engines was in the rear of the engine room.
Whereabouts
The Unterwalden was decommissioned in 1971 and sold to the Netherlands in 1973 . In 1979 it was converted to the Regina Rheni cabin ship . The four machines were replaced by two Deutz engines with 730 hp each. Since 1984 the ship has been sailing under the name Serena with home port Heesch and ENI 02322470.
