Storm in Brazil 2011

After heavy storms in Brazil on 12 January 2011 saw particularly in the approximately 100 kilometers north of Rio de Janeiro lies the mountains of Teresópolis to floods and mudslides . At least 335 people died.

storm

In the days leading up to the floods, heavy rainfall fell in the region. It was the heaviest rainfall in living memory, said residents of Teresópolis .

Landslides and floods

Soaked slopes and river banks broke off above the city of Teresópolis and buried cars, huts and houses. At least 130 people died there alone.

The mountainous region north of Rio was hit hardest by the rains and landslides. The narrow gorges there were fatal to many victims. Water and mud carried away the poorly fortified huts of the Favellas on the slopes. Many people died because there was no escape in the narrow valleys.

97 people died in Nova Friburgo, including three fire fighters. 18 people died in the village of Petrópolis . In the neighboring state of São Paulo , many places were flooded after rainfall. 14 people died there.

In the disaster regions, the power supply and the telephone network collapsed in many places.

Relief efforts

In Teresópolis, around 800 rescue workers from the fire brigade and civil defense were on duty to look for survivors. The Brazilian Navy sent two helicopters to assist the rescue workers. The authorities reported that the more than 300 victims were mostly in the cities of Teresópolis and Nova Friburgo .

causes

According to a climate researcher from Rio, the region is so endangered because a climatic corridor runs through the region that extends from the south of the Amazon region to the south-east of Brazil. Moisture and heat would be transported in the corridor. This leads to the fact that cloud formation is intensified and such storms occur.

Reactions

Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff announced that she would provide around 400 million euros as emergency aid for those affected by the disaster.
