The Upper Sioux Agency , also known as the Yellow Medicine Agency, is a former Indian reservation on the Minnesota River south of Granite Falls in the US state of Minnesota . The reserve was created in 1851 after the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux was signed . With this contract, the Dakota gave up much of their territory in Iowa and Minnesota and sold the land to the United States of America for $ 1,665,000. The Dakota reserved only 2 areas for themselves, the Upper Sioux Agency and the Lower Sioux Agency . Originally the area of the reservation was 30 by 110 km. After the contract was broken several times and promised payments were not made, the Sioux uprising broke out in 1862 . After the failure of the uprising, the treaty was unilaterally terminated by the United States. The reservation was massively reduced and the surviving residents were deported to South Dakota and Nebraska . Since 1963 there has been a park on the premises of the former agency, the Upper Sioux Agency State Park , which is intended to commemorate the Indian agency and the reservation. In 1938 the United States government returned land to the indigenous people. The Upper Sioux Indian Community Dakota Pezihutazizi Oyate was created .
