The Upton Park Football Club was an English amateur football club from the London district Upton Park in the district of Newham . The football club existed from the middle of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The club was mainly known for its participation in the first FA Cup in 1871/72 and the victory at the Olympic demonstration tournament in Paris in 1900 . Upton Park played its games in West Ham Park .

history

The club, founded in 1866, took part in the first edition of the FA Cup in 1871 as one of 15 teams , but failed in the first round. Winning the FA Cup was not granted to the Londoners, until 1884 they made it into the quarter-finals four times. The London Senior Cup , a trophy competition for teams from London, the club won at its premiere in 1882. The members of Upton Park were avid amateur athletes and yet in 1884 unintentionally triggered the legalization of professional sportsmanship. After a draw in the FA Cup, in the connection of which the opponent Preston North End paid bonuses to his players, Upton Park lodged an objection and got the right from the Football Association . Preston was disqualified and Upton Park advanced to the next round. Due to the objection, however, the FA was immediately confronted with the issue and allowed bonuses to be paid in the following season, even under pressure to avoid a spin-off of some clubs.

The association was dissolved for the first time in 1887, but was re-established four years later. In 1900 Upton Park took part in the Olympic Games as a representative of Great Britain . The team defeated Club Français Paris 4-0 and was subsequently awarded a gold medal by the IOC. During the Olympic Games, football was only a demonstration sport.

Despite the fact that it has the same name as Upton Park , West Ham United's stadium (which was then still called Thames Ironworks ), there is no direct connection to the stadium. Upton Park FC never played at Upton Park, but played their games in West Ham Park, a few streets away .

In 1911 the association finally dissolved.

Famous players

The club produced three England internationals. In addition to Segar Bastard , who also acted as referee , Clement Mitchell and Conrad Warner were two other internationals in the ranks of East London. The later secretary of the FA, Charles William Alcock , is said to have been active for Upton Park, as well as Charlie Dove , one of the first stars of Thames Ironworks .
