Cultural monument |
The Ura e Tabakëve (in German Gerberbrücke ) is an Ottoman stone arch bridge in the Kosovar city of Gjakova . The bridge, believed to have been built in 1790, crosses the Erenik River . It was declared a cultural monument in 1962 .
The Ura e Tabakëve is 127 meters long, making it one of the ten longest historic stone bridges in the region. It consists of seven arches that are 14 to 16 meters long. Their width is four meters. At around three and a half meters, the bridge is not too high. It was built from small stone blocks, some of which were decorated with ornaments such as the sun, crescent moon, apples and fists.
The bridge is located outside the historic center of the city of Gjakova on the southwestern outskirts. It establishes a connection to the places southwest of the city and simplified the trade with Tropoja , Shkodra and Kukës in Albania . Contracting for the construction was probably the eponymous Gerber - guild from Gjakova. The exact date of construction is not known, at least according to older sources. The inscriptions are illegible and the construction, which is very similar to the Schneider Bridge , refers to the 17th century.
In the first half of the 20th century the bridge was modified, among other things to create a straight roadway. A railing was also put up. During restoration work in 2004, the historical original condition was restored.
Remarks
- ↑ The 17th century is also occasionally given as the construction period. However, as in the official sources, the bridge is mostly dated to the 18th century.
